President Bola Tinubu has called for greater tax compliance among Nigerians, stressing that sustainable infrastructure development depends on citizens’ willingness to contribute their fair share to the nation’s revenue pool. The President made the appeal on Wednesday while commissioning the full-scope development of Arterial Road N5 (Obafemi Awolowo Way), stretching from Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III in the Dape District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the event, Tinubu said the newly completed road corridor was a strategic investment designed to improve connectivity, reduce traffic congestion and unlock economic opportunities within the rapidly expanding capital city. He noted that the project reflects his administration’s commitment to delivering critical infrastructure capable of stimulating growth, improving mobility and enhancing the quality of life of residents.
According to the President, infrastructure development remains central to the Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that government requires adequate and sustainable revenue to continue funding roads, bridges, schools, hospitals and other public facilities across the country. “Projects such as this remind us that development is a shared responsibility. Every kilometre of road, every bridge and every public facility is made possible through collective contributions to the national purse,” he said.
Tinubu urged individuals and businesses to embrace tax payment as a civic obligation, noting that improved compliance would strengthen government’s capacity to meet growing infrastructure demands without excessive dependence on borrowing. He said the administration was committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in the use of public resources, assuring taxpayers that revenues generated would continue to be channelled into projects that directly benefit citizens.
The President commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and officials of the FCT Administration for the successful execution of the project, describing the pace of infrastructure delivery in Abuja as evidence of purposeful leadership and prudent management of public funds. He said opening up strategic road networks was critical to supporting urban expansion, attracting investment and promoting economic activities within the capital territory.
Tinubu also reiterated his administration’s resolve to continue investing in critical infrastructure nationwide, particularly in transportation, housing, healthcare and education, to drive economic transformation and inclusive growth. Earlier, Wike described the completion of the arterial road as a significant milestone in efforts to implement Abuja’s master plan and improve access to developing districts within the city.
The minister said the project would ease movement for residents, reduce travel time and encourage commercial and residential development in Dape and neighbouring communities. He added that the FCT Administration remained focused on completing ongoing projects across the territory and delivering infrastructure that would improve the living conditions of residents.
Stakeholders and residents who attended the commissioning welcomed the project, expressing optimism that it would boost property values, enhance economic activities and further strengthen Abuja’s position as a modern and functional capital city. The commissioning forms part of a series of infrastructure projects being unveiled in the FCT under the Tinubu administration, underscoring government’s determination to bridge the nation’s infrastructure deficit while promoting sustainable development.
