FG Launches National Health Fellows Recruitment Across 774 LGAs
FG Recruits Health Fellows in 774 LGAs Nationwide

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially commenced a nationwide recruitment exercise for a new batch of National Health Fellows. This initiative is a strategic move to bolster the country's primary healthcare system and cultivate a new generation of youth leaders in the medical and public health sectors.

Merit-Based Selection for Grassroots Impact

Officials have confirmed that the ongoing recruitment process is strictly merit-based, designed to ensure transparency, credibility, and fairness. The selection panels are rigorously assessing candidates on their technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, leadership potential, and commitment to improving community health systems.

In Nasarawa State, the exercise is already in an advanced stage, with thirteen candidates shortlisted from the state's thirteen local government areas. This model is set to be replicated across the country, with the ultimate goal of deploying one fellow to each of Nigeria's 774 local government areas.

Structure and Goals of the National Health Fellows Programme

The National Health Fellows programme is a presidential initiative being implemented by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in collaboration with state ministries and development partners. It is specifically crafted to address gaps in healthcare delivery, particularly in underserved rural and hard-to-reach communities.

Successful applicants will be engaged for a period of one year. During this service year, fellows will gain hands-on, practical experience in leadership and health management. They will be stationed within primary healthcare facilities, where they will work directly on planning, monitoring, and supporting health interventions at the community level.

The programme aims to achieve several key objectives:

  • Strengthen local healthcare capacity and coordination at the grassroots.
  • Foster innovative approaches to service delivery in challenging environments.
  • Expose young professionals to policy implementation and data-driven decision-making within the public health system.
  • Build a sustainable pipeline of skilled professionals ready to support ongoing health sector reforms.

Broader Context of Government Recruitment Drives

This recruitment for National Health Fellows is part of a series of employment initiatives by the Federal Government aimed at engaging skilled Nigerians and addressing critical national needs. In a related development, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has also opened its online application portal for the 2026 Hajj National Medical Team.

That separate exercise, announced by Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, the Chairman and CEO of NAHCON, is calling for qualified Medical Doctors, Pharmacists, Nurses, and Environmental or Community Health Officers. Successful candidates will be deployed to provide medical support for Nigerian pilgrims during the upcoming Hajj operations.

The concurrent launch of these programmes highlights a concerted effort to leverage national talent in pivotal areas of health and public service, offering valuable career-building opportunities for Nigerian professionals.
