Coalition Demands President Tinubu Sack Defence Minister Matawalle Over Security Concerns

The National Coalition Against Terrorism (NCAT) has issued a strong call for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to either dismiss or reassign the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle. This demand is based on allegations that the minister lacks the necessary security expertise and has lost public confidence, which the group argues is crucial for effective national security management.

External Assessments and Public Perception

During a press conference held in Abuja on Friday, NCAT Convener Marvin Ibe highlighted that the coalition's stance is influenced by recent reports attributed to U.S. Congresswoman Representative Kimberly Daniels. These reports reportedly recommended the removal or redeployment of Matawalle due to concerns over his performance and public perception. Ibe urged President Tinubu to take decisive action based on what he described as credible external assessments, emphasizing that this is in the best interest of Nigeria's national security.

Ibe stated, "We have carefully observed the ongoing allegations and counter-allegations surrounding the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, particularly concerning his past engagements during his tenure as Governor of Zamfara State." He claimed that public perception of the minister has been negatively impacted by controversies related to alleged dealings with bandits, which could undermine trust in the country's security leadership.

Impact on Security Framework

The coalition aligned itself with the position attributed to Daniels, arguing that Nigeria must seriously consider any intelligence or assessments that could strengthen its fight against terrorism. Ibe emphasized, "The reality is that when citizens lose confidence in those entrusted with their safety, the entire security framework is weakened." To rebuild public trust and enhance operational effectiveness, he suggested that the redeployment of the minister should be considered as a minimum step.

Furthermore, Ibe urged the federal government to intensify efforts in tracking and prosecuting terrorism financiers, noting that cutting off funding sources is critical to defeating insurgency and violent extremism. He added, "We call on the President to act decisively and ensure that all elements undermining national security are addressed without delay."

Urgent Reforms Needed

The coalition maintained that urgent reforms are necessary to strengthen Nigeria's security system and restore confidence among both citizens and international partners. They argue that accountability and decisive leadership are essential for restoring domestic and international confidence in the country's security architecture. This call comes amid ongoing security challenges, with the group stressing that addressing such concerns promptly is vital for national stability and safety.
