Enugu Community Urges Governor Mbah's Intervention in Protracted Crisis

The people of Obeagu Ugwuaji community in Enugu South Local Council of Enugu State have made a fervent appeal to Governor Peter Mbah to step in and resolve a prolonged crisis that has plagued their land, turning them into perpetual litigants in various courts across the state. This call for intervention follows a protest organized by a dissident group led by the former President General of the community, Freedom Obi, who has leveled serious accusations against their traditional ruler, Igwe Ikenga Nya.

Allegations of Land Sales and Financial Mismanagement

The protesting group alleged that Igwe Ikenga Nya has been involved in the unauthorized sale of community land and embezzled over N400 million belonging to the residents. They expressed their dissatisfaction through placards with various inscriptions during the demonstration. However, in a counter-protest, other community leaders dismissed these claims as falsehoods, attributing the unrest to deeper administrative issues within the previous Town Union leadership.

Spokesperson for the community, Aloy Obodo, a former Director of Engineering at the Federal Ministry of Works and ex-Commissioner in Enugu State, provided context by tracing the crisis to the mismanagement of a community project. He explained that a 30-room service apartment initiative, intended to generate sustainable revenue and reduce reliance on land sales, became a conduit for corruption under the leadership of the immediate past President General, Freedom Obi.

Obodo alleged that Chinonso Obi acted as a sole administrator, bypassing checks and balances, leading to situations where construction materials were stolen at night by those entrusted with their care. He noted that while this multi-million-naira project remains incomplete after four years, the former PG and his associates have reportedly completed several personal luxury buildings.

Defense and Counterclaims from Community Leaders

Addressing the specific allegation of N400 million against Igwe Ikenga, Obodo clarified that the monarch is not a sole signatory to any community account. He revealed that this matter had already been addressed at the Enugu State House of Assembly, where accusers failed to provide evidence and were forced to issue a public apology to the traditional ruler.

Caretaker Committee Chairman Joseph Ani supported these claims, stating that hostility towards the palace and current administration stems from a refusal to bury the results of a pending audit. Ani alleged that the former PG has consistently used recruited youths to disrupt general meetings to prevent scrutiny of his stewardship. He further claimed that the crisis escalated when the Caretaker Committee refused to ratify an unauthorized allocation of 100 plots of community land to a former governor of Enugu State, leading to a fallout with the Ministry of Chieftaincy Matters.

Ani also raised an alarm over the militarization of the community's youth, alleging that over 80 percent have been drawn into cultism by the previous administration to serve as a private militia. This situation has forced many elders and government officials to flee the community for their safety.

Financial Discrepancies and Wealth Sources Questioned

Adding to the defense, Secretary of the Caretaker Committee Francis Ikechukwu Egbo challenged the former PG, Freedom Obi, to declare the source of his wealth. Egbo noted that within a four-year tenure, the former official allegedly built two massive estates despite having no identifiable business or source of income prior to taking office.

On the issue of the N400 million allegation, Egbo presented bank statements from the community's Union Bank account, showing that only N226 million was generated over a ten-year period. Yet, the former PG's administration alone spent over N260 million during its four-year tenure, leaving a deficit that remains unaccounted for.

Egbo also addressed the recent demolition at the New Enugu City site, which protesters had blamed on the Igwe. He clarified that the Igwe and the Caretaker Committee were actually victims, having been forced to rebuild fences demolished by the former PG's group in an attempt to implicate the monarch before the state government.
