At the inauguration of the 31-kilometer Ohoror–Bomadi Road, Governor Oborevwori addressed a jubilant crowd, framing the event as more than just a infrastructure milestone—it represents a pivotal shift in the state's development philosophy. "We are resolved to rewrite the story of our riverine communities," he declared, highlighting a commitment to ensuring no area is left behind.
This newly reconstructed road spans across Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Patani, Burutu, and Bomadi Local Councils, serving as a vital lifeline that connects previously isolated communities. It facilitates improved trade, mobility, and social interactions, offering relief from high transportation costs and poor access that have plagued residents for years.
Engineering Innovation to Overcome Geographical Barriers
The Ohoror–Bomadi Road exemplifies modern engineering solutions tailored for difficult terrain, featuring extensive sand filling, soil stabilization, reinforced concrete structures, and embankment protection. With widths varying between 6.5 and 10.3 meters and hard shoulders in key sections, the project underscores a focus on durability and safety, proving that challenging geography need not impede progress.
Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, described the road as a product of innovative engineering, reinforcing the administration's strategy to use technology and adaptation in infrastructure development.
Catalyzing Economic Transformation Through Connectivity
Governor Oborevwori views infrastructure as a catalyst for broader economic transformation. By linking remote communities, the government aims to unlock potential in sectors like agriculture, fishing, and local commerce. Farmers can now transport produce more efficiently, traders access wider markets, and essential services such as healthcare and education become more reachable, reducing travel time and business costs.
Bomadi Council Chairman, Dagidi Andaye, hailed the road as a "historic intervention," noting it is the first major project in the area in over 16 years. Stakeholders, including lawmakers and traditional rulers, emphasized the project's role in fostering a more integrated Delta economy, bridging rural and urban divides.
Expanding Infrastructure Projects Across the Riverine Belt
Beyond the Ohoror–Bomadi Road, the administration is implementing multiple projects valued at over ₦80 billion across the riverine belt. These initiatives target internal roads, boundary linkages, and township upgrades in areas such as Bomadi, Burutu, Warri North, and Warri South-West. Examples include the Torugbene–Ojobo link, internal roads in Ogulagha and Odimodi, and the rehabilitation of Oporoza township roads.
Commissioner for Riverine Infrastructure, Ebikeme Clark, described these efforts as "life-changing interventions" that open up coastal regions long marginalized from development. In Ndokwa land, community groups have praised strategic road approvals as a boost for economic growth and hope restoration.
Enhancing Power Supply to Support Development
Recognizing that electricity is crucial for sustained growth, the Oborevwori administration is aggressively improving power supply across Delta State. Efforts include reconnecting communities to the national grid, extending transmission lines, installing transformers, and upgrading substations. For instance, in Agbarha-Otor, upgrading a transformer to a 5MVA injection substation has revived economic activity after years of darkness.
Additional projects involve rehabilitating collapsed high-tension lines and extending 33KV lines to underserved areas like Warri South-West. These initiatives are supported by policy frameworks such as the Delta State Electricity Law and a comprehensive electricity policy, ensuring structured and sustainable improvements.
Strengthening Security and Governance for Sustainable Growth
To complement infrastructure and power reforms, the administration is enhancing security and governance. Plans include constructing police divisions across all 25 local councils and establishing a Special Protection Unit base to create a safe environment for investment, especially in newly accessible areas.
Governance reforms focus on improving tax systems, aligning with national policies, and enhancing transparency to reduce multiple taxation and boost the ease of doing business. Hosting the South-South Zonal Headquarters of the Tax Ombud Office further positions Delta as a model of accountability and investor confidence.
