Suspected Boko Haram Attack Destroys Properties in Borno Community

Several properties have been destroyed after suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched an attack on Debiro Community in Biu Local Government Area of Borno state on Sunday, February 15. According to residents, the attackers, numbering about forty, arrived on sixteen motorcycles disguised as local vigilantes and attempted to gather community members who fled into the bush in fear.

Details of the Attack

The assailants proceeded to launch a destructive assault, burning a church, approximately twenty-five houses, foodstuffs, and all available vehicles found in the community. Although no lives were lost in this failed mission, the damage to infrastructure and livelihoods was severe. A resident described the scene, stating, "After a successful harvest, almost all have not transported their food items to Biu, thinking peace has returned, until suddenly this attack of last Sunday. They came in disguise, wearing vigilantes’ uniforms, and they wanted to gather people who ran into the bush before launching an attack. Looking at the rocky nature of our community, they could not pursue us with their motorcycles."

Community and Security Context

Debiro, an agrarian community located about forty-eight kilometers from Biu, has faced ongoing security challenges. In the last two weeks, insurgents had attacked Harang and Tarfa communities, killing five people, including a pastor. The poor road network in the area has consistently hindered military responses, delaying swift action during such attacks. This incident highlights the persistent threat of terrorism in Borno state and the vulnerabilities faced by remote communities.

The attack underscores the need for improved security measures and infrastructure to protect residents and ensure timely interventions. Authorities are urged to address these gaps to prevent future occurrences and support affected communities in rebuilding their lives.
