Zamfara Police Commissioner Reports 50 Bandits Killed, Two Officers Fallen in Highway Clash

The Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Mohammed Bello, has disclosed that over 50 bandits were neutralized by police forces in collaboration with sister security agencies along the Gusau-Funtua highway on Friday. According to his statement, two police officers paid the supreme price after sustaining gunshot injuries during the intense confrontation.

Security Strategies and Road Closures Implemented

The State Police boss further stated that the Command has designed formidable strategies against the bandits, one of which involves closing the road between 6 pm and 6 am on a daily basis to prevent attacks on innocent persons. He lamented that despite these measures, some motorists attempt to bypass security by using bush paths, often falling into the traps of the very bandits they are trying to evade. This behavior, he noted, leads to continued public blame on security agencies for perceived lapses.

Support for Injured Officers and Family Care

Commissioner Bello also disclosed that the Police authority has been actively taking care of the family of a police operative who was injured by armed bandits and hospitalized. The authorities are covering his hospital bills, emphasizing that Life Insurance and hazard allowances for officers cannot be compromised under any circumstances.

Farmer Protection Initiatives for the 2026 Farming Season

During the courtesy visit to the Zamfara State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, where he fielded questions from journalists, Bello highlighted ongoing efforts. His Command, in partnership with other sister security agencies, has designed strategies to protect farmers from constant bandit attacks and kidnappings during the 2026 rainy season farming period. He stressed that the security of farmers cannot be treated lightly, warning that failure to act could lead to hunger and starvation in the state.

We have formed specialized units to effectively monitor bandits and kidnappers, Bello stated. The practice of farmers paying levies and taxes to bandits to access their farmlands will soon come to an end as we intensify our operations.

Appeal for Media Collaboration

The Commissioner appealed to journalists to collaborate with security agencies in disseminating their activities. He emphasized that such cooperation is crucial for informing the general public about the efforts being made to safeguard their interests and combat insecurity in the region.
