Adamawa Government Addresses Escalating Lamurde Crisis, Details Security Strategy

The Adamawa state government has issued a firm assurance to residents that it is implementing decisive measures to address the escalating insecurity affecting various parts of the state. This response comes amid renewed communal clashes in Lamurde Local Government Area that have prompted significant concern among local populations.

Government Implements Curfew Amid Renewed Violence

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri recently imposed a comprehensive 24-hour curfew on the Lamurde community following a resurgence of violent clashes in the area. This security measure has generated mixed reactions among residents, particularly as reports emerged about the government's plans to establish a specialized Special Counter Terrorism Unit in Madagali Local Government Area as part of broader security interventions across Adamawa State.

Many residents have expressed confusion and concern about why a similar specialized security unit has not been established in Lamurde Local Government Area. This questioning has intensified given that the Lamurde crisis reportedly dates back to July 2015, yet has only resulted in the implementation of a curfew rather than more comprehensive security infrastructure.

Commissioner Explains Differing Security Approaches

Speaking exclusively to journalists, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Iliya James, provided detailed clarification about the government's security decisions. He emphasized that the administration's actions are based strictly on the specific nature of security challenges facing each location within Adamawa State.

"The governor doesn't have any personal reason behind creating a counter terrorism unit based in Madagali," James explained. "All he is doing is for the interest of the people of Adamawa State and for the betterment of the state in times of insecurity. However, the two local communities are facing fundamentally different security challenges."

The commissioner elaborated on these distinct security scenarios:

  • Madagali Local Government Area is confronting terrorist attacks originating from neighboring states, requiring specialized counter-terrorism capabilities
  • Lamurde Local Government Area is experiencing internal communal clashes among local tribes, necessitating different intervention strategies

"Therefore, the intervention will definitely differ, looking at the different scenarios happening," James continued. "The imposition of the 24-hour curfew in Lamurde will help to reduce the high tension amongst the two tribes, depending on the time they have decided to resolve their differences for peace. Even though the Lamurde crisis has lasted longer, the government is still working on providing full security to the community always."

Government Appeals for Understanding and Patience

The state government has urged residents not to misinterpret its security decisions and has called for prayers for peace in the affected communities. Commissioner James emphasized the administration's commitment to protecting all communities across Adamawa State with adequate manpower and resources.

"The governor is trying his best to ensure Adamawa state enjoys unending peace and safety," James stated. "It baffles him to always hear of any insurgency within a community of the state."

The commissioner also addressed the governor's recent political defection from the People's Democratic Party to the All Progressive Congress, describing the move as necessary due to constant crises within the PDP. He emphasized that this decision was made with the support of the state executive council and key stakeholders, despite some individual disagreements among government officials.

Humanitarian Impact of Lamurde Crisis

In related developments, the Lamurde crisis has created severe humanitarian consequences for local residents. Reports indicate that a disabled man has spent seven days searching for his wife and children following deadly communal clashes that destroyed homes and displaced numerous families.

Mr. Alfred Pwanadi recounted moving between Numan and Demsa in desperate search of his family, surviving for days without adequate food or water until local residents and a church offered him essential aid and clothing. This case highlights the broader human toll of the ongoing violence in Lamurde.

The Adamawa state government maintains that it remains sensitive and cautious in handling all security issues while committing to comprehensive protection for all communities across the state. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely and adjust security measures as necessary to address evolving challenges in both Lamurde and other affected areas.
