Adamawa Government Responds to Escalating Lamurde Crisis

The Adamawa state government has issued a firm assurance to residents that it is implementing decisive measures to address the escalating insecurity affecting parts of the state, particularly in the Lamurde community. This response comes amid renewed communal clashes that have heightened tensions and prompted significant security interventions.

Curfew Imposed as Lamurde Conflict Intensifies

In response to the deteriorating situation, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri recently imposed a strict 24-hour curfew on the Lamurde community following a renewed outbreak of violence. This decisive action has generated mixed reactions among local residents, especially when contrasted with other security measures being implemented elsewhere in the state.

Many residents have expressed confusion and concern about why the government plans to establish a Special Counter Terrorism Unit in Madagali Local Government Area while Lamurde, which has been experiencing persistent conflict since July 2015, has only received a curfew as its primary security response.

Government Explains Differing Security Approaches

Speaking exclusively to media representatives, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Iliya James, clarified that the government's security decisions are based strictly on the specific nature of threats facing different communities.

"The governor doesn't have any personal reason behind creating a counter terrorism unit based in Madagali," James explained. "All he is doing is for the interest of the people of Adamawa State and for the betterment of the state in times of insecurity. However, the two local communities are facing different security challenges."

The commissioner elaborated on the distinct nature of threats:

  • Madagali is confronting terrorist attacks originating from neighboring states
  • Lamurde is experiencing internal communal clashes between local tribes

"Therefore, the intervention will definitely differ," James emphasized, "looking at the different scenarios happening. The imposition of the 24-hour curfew in Lamurde will help to reduce the high tension amongst the two tribes, depending on the time they have decided to resolve their differences for peace."

Government Reassures Continued Security Commitment

The state government has stressed its ongoing commitment to providing adequate security manpower across all communities in Adamawa. Despite the prolonged nature of the Lamurde crisis, officials maintain that they are continuously working to enhance security measures in the affected area.

"Even though the Lamurde crisis has lasted longer, the government is still working on providing full security to the community always," Commissioner James assured.

He urged residents not to misinterpret the government's actions and called for prayers and cooperation to achieve lasting peace in the affected communities. "The governor is trying his best to ensure Adamawa state enjoys unending peace and safety; it baffles him to always hear of any insurgency within a community of the state," he added.

Humanitarian Impact of Lamurde Crisis

The escalating conflict has resulted in significant humanitarian consequences, with reports emerging of displaced families and traumatized victims. In one particularly distressing case, a disabled man has spent seven days searching for his wife and children following the deadly communal clash that destroyed homes and forced residents to flee.

Mr. Alfred Pwanadi recounted moving between Numan and Demsa in search of his missing family members, surviving for days without adequate food or water until local residents and a church provided him with essential aid and clothing.

Political Context and Government Unity

Commissioner James also addressed questions regarding Governor Fintiri's recent political defection from the People's Democratic Party to the All Progressive Congress, describing the move as necessary for state stability.

"It was necessary due to the constant crisis in the People's Democratic Party," he explained. "He aligned with the APC for the interest of the people of the state, not his personal interest."

The commissioner confirmed that the governor's decision received support from the state executive council and other key stakeholders, despite some individual disagreements. He specifically noted that the commissioner for works and energy chose not to join the political realignment but emphasized that this did not indicate any broader rift within the government.

"The public should not feel there's any problem between the former commissioner and the governor because they are in good times," James stated, "and he made a personal decision not to join the All Progressive Congress; everyone has the right to choose what he or she wants."

The Adamawa government continues to monitor the security situation closely while implementing measures designed to address the specific challenges facing different communities across the state.
