Dozens Feared Dead in Renewed Ibaji Communal Clash

The longstanding unresolved conflict between residents of Ishi and Itale communities in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State has resurfaced, leading to renewed violence that has left dozens feared dead. The clash, which began on Wednesday afternoon, reportedly resulted in the deaths of an undisclosed number of residents and the destruction of numerous residential houses.

Violence Erupts Despite Peace Efforts

According to sources, the violence lasted for 24 hours before the intervention of a Police Anti-riot squad deployed from the Idah Area Command. The Guardian reports that the feud between the communities is age-long, primarily over farmland and fishing ponds. The apex Igala socio-cultural organization, Ukomu Igala, had made futile efforts to restore peace and brotherhood among the residents.

Following the intervention of Ukomu Igala, stakeholders from Ibaji were brought to Lokoja for a peace parley, after which a peace agreement was signed by leaders of both communities in the presence of the state Commissioner of Police. However, upon returning home after the Lokoja Peace Agreement, the people engaged each other in another orgy of violence, with homes being razed.

Police Detain Traditional Rulers

The Commissioner of Police had to detain the traditional rulers and some prominent sons of the communities over the flagrant disregard for peace and the amicable resolution of the issue, according to Ojonide Acho. Video clips circulating on social media indicate that the level of violence this time is far more devastating than previous ones.

A source disclosed that Ishi village was razed down completely, with no house left standing. Women and children had to flee to neighboring villages to take refuge in primary schools and churches. The violence escalated on Thursday as mercenaries were brought in by one of the communities to fight their enemies.

Violence Spreads to Neighboring Villages

At the time of filing this report, there were strong indications that the violence has extended to other neighboring villages due to suspicion that such villages are hosting their perceived enemies. There are also heightened fears that Aluaja people are planning to attack Iru people tonight.
