Plateau Communities Honored with Financial Reward for Heroic Protection During Attacks
In a powerful demonstration of unity amid crisis, residents of Anguwan Rogo and Anguwan Rukuba communities in Jos North, Plateau State, have been financially rewarded for their courageous actions in protecting both Christians and Muslims during recent violent incidents. The communities received a total of N1 million from former lawmaker Gwani Muhammad Adam Alkali in recognition of their commitment to peaceful coexistence and humanity above religious differences.
Communities Shield Neighbors During Separate Violent Incidents
During a period of heightened tensions in Jos North, residents of Anguwan Rukuba intervened to protect several Muslims when gunmen stormed their area. The rescued individuals were safely handed over to security agencies once the situation stabilized. Days later, following the easing of a curfew, community members in Anguwan Rogo similarly protected Christians affected by renewed clashes, ensuring their safe transfer to security personnel.
Each community received N500,000 from the former lawmaker, who emphasized that the gesture was meant to strengthen bonds between neighbors and promote unity. The attacks had resulted in significant casualties, with at least 28 people reported killed in one incident, highlighting the severity of the crisis that prompted these heroic interventions.
Residents Emphasize Humanity Above Religious Differences
Community representatives from both areas explained that their actions were guided by shared humanity rather than religious affiliations. Blessed Geoffrey from Anguwan Rukuba stated, "What we did was simply put humanity first—protecting our neighbors regardless of their faith. They are human beings like us, and if we have the chance to protect them, we can do it. This recognition strengthens our belief that peace is not only possible but necessary."
Muhammad Sulaiman from Anguwan Rogo added, "What happened showed that humanity is above religion, and we are proud of what both communities achieved together. A human being is a human being irrespective of their religion. We appreciate Gwani for strengthening the bond between us and our Christian neighbors. We did not act for recognition, but for the sake of Allah."
Context of Violence in Plateau State
The protective actions occurred against a backdrop of ongoing violence in Plateau State. Earlier reports indicated that suspected gunmen attacked Agwan Rukuba on March 29, arriving on motorcycles around 7:30 PM and shooting sporadically, causing panic and sending residents fleeing for safety. Witnesses described the attackers striking while people were still outdoors conducting their usual activities, creating chaos throughout the community.
These incidents in Jos North followed other security challenges in the region, including terrorist activities in neighboring areas. Security operations in the North-East have seen troops repelling major terrorist assaults and recovering significant caches of weapons, demonstrating the broader security context affecting the region.
The financial reward to the Plateau communities serves as both recognition of their bravery and an investment in continued peaceful coexistence. By protecting neighbors across religious lines during moments of extreme danger, these residents have provided a powerful example of how shared humanity can overcome division, even in the most challenging circumstances.
