Plateau Women Destroy Military Checkpoint in Protest Over Killings
Women from the Gashish community in Barkin Ladi Local Council of Plateau State took drastic action yesterday, destroying a military checkpoint during a protest over recurring attacks in the area. The protesters expressed deep frustration with security forces, accusing them of failing to protect residents and suggesting possible complicity with attackers. This demonstration highlights ongoing tensions and violence in the region, as communities grapple with insecurity.
Protesters Voice Anger and Distress
Sources reported that the women gathered in large numbers, visibly distressed, and vandalised the checkpoint as they voiced their anger over continued violence. They criticised security operatives for having lost touch with reality, noting that armed groups continue to inflict hardship on residents despite the military presence. Many women spoke about repeated attacks on their community, emphasizing that youths, women, and the elderly remain exposed to danger. They urged the government and security agencies to take urgent steps to end the violence and restore peace.
Personal Accounts from the Protest
During the demonstration, several protesters shared their harrowing experiences. Mercy Dachung, a mother of four, stated, We are tired of burying our children and husbands. The soldiers are here, yet we are still dying. If they cannot protect us, they should leave our land. Another protester, Nancy Gyang, highlighted the indifference of security forces, saying, Each time we are attacked, we call them. They come after we have counted our losses. Are they with us or with the killers? We removed that checkpoint because it has not stopped the attacks. Chundung Bot, a women leader, added that the community no longer trusts the security presence, noting, They tell us they are here for peace, but there is no peace. Our youths are gone, our elderly are gone, and our farms are no longer safe. We want the government to hear us. We cannot continue like this.
Background of Renewed Attacks
The protest followed renewed attacks in parts of Barkin Ladi and neighbouring Riyom Local Council, where gunmen reportedly invaded communities and opened fire on residents late Sunday night, killing six people. Residents described the incidents, which occurred at separate locations, as causing widespread panic and forcing many to flee their homes. This violence underscores the persistent threat faced by communities in Plateau State.
Response from Local Association
Meanwhile, the National Publicity Secretary of Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwom, dismissed reports on social media alleging that Berom bandits were arrested in Danwal, describing the claim as false and misleading. According to the association, two residents were recently attacked by suspected armed bandits, while local youths who rescued one of the victims were later arrested by security personnel. The group called for the immediate release of the arrested youths and urged security agencies to focus on apprehending the actual perpetrators.
This incident reflects broader issues of security and trust in Plateau State, as communities demand more effective protection and accountability from authorities.
