11 Killed in Ogun Bridge Accident

Eleven people have died after a vehicle plunged off the Eruku Bridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, which occurred on the night of Sunday, May 10, 2026.

The FRSC Ogun State Sector Command spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi, stated that the crash involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ. The vehicle reportedly somersaulted and fell off the bridge, trapping all occupants inside as the doors locked upon impact.

Details of the Fatal Crash

According to Odunsi, all 11 occupants of the vehicle—10 adult males and one adult female—died in the accident. FRSC rescue operatives from the Itori Unit Command were immediately deployed to the scene. With assistance from local community members, personnel dismantled the vehicle to recover the victims' bodies. The remains were deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.

Probable Causes Identified
The preliminary investigation cites driving under the influence of alcohol and overloading as probable causes of the tragic accident.

FRSC Commander Urges Caution

Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, advised motorists traveling on the Abeokuta-Lagos route to exercise extreme caution, especially during night journeys. He also expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.

Ogunjobi emphasized the need for vigilance on the road, noting that many accidents occur due to preventable factors such as speeding, drunk driving, and overloading.

Nigeria's Road Safety Concerns

This deadly crash highlights the ongoing risks on Nigeria's road network. FRSC data for 2024 recorded 5,421 deaths in 9,570 road accidents, an increase of 340 fatalities compared to the previous year. Experts attribute these statistics to dilapidated infrastructure, lax enforcement of traffic laws, and driver indiscipline.

Stationary trucks, often in poor condition, are a significant hazard on Nigerian highways, frequently causing gridlocks and contributing to accidents.

Previous Accidents in the Region

In a similar incident earlier this year, 16 people died in a road accident on the Lokoja–Okene highway in Kogi State. The crash occurred near Aku village along the Osara axis, with authorities attributing it to driver fatigue and excessive speed.

The FRSC continues to urge all road users to adhere to traffic regulations and prioritize safety to prevent further tragedies.
