Authorities in Adamawa State have launched an investigation into a severe case of domestic violence that left a woman hospitalized after an alleged assault by her younger brother. The incident, which occurred on Monday, January 5, 2026, has drawn attention to issues of gender-based violence and family conflict resolution.
Sister Recounts Terrifying Ordeal, Rejects Family Plea
The victim, who chose to speak anonymously, described a harrowing attack by her 30-year-old brother, identified as Hamza. According to her account, the violence erupted around 9:00 PM when she inquired about a discussion they had earlier in the day.
"I didn't do anything wrong to him," the sister stated. "The response I got was a beating, to the extent I fell to the ground and was rushed to the hospital." She revealed that Hamza is a known drug addict who frequently returns home intoxicated and has a history of violent behavior towards his siblings.
Despite intense pressure from her family to settle the matter privately, the woman stood firm. "My family pleaded with me to withdraw the case from the police station and settle it as a family, but I told them, it must be documented to avoid future occurrences," she explained. Her decision to involve the police was also influenced by the deteriorating health of their father, whose condition worsened upon hearing news of the attack.
Police Intervention and Official Warning
The Adamawa State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Hamza following a formal report by his sister. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, condemned the act, stating it was against the law and that the suspect would face legal action.
"It's so unfortunate for a young man to beat up his own sister; it is against the law, and as such, he will face legal actions," SP Nguroje said. He acknowledged the family's plea for bail but indicated the police would monitor the situation closely for any retaliation. The command granted a one-week window for family resolution while maintaining official records of the case.
Authorities used the opportunity to issue a broader warning against gender-based violence. "We urge the general public to avoid such bad social and gender based violence against women and girls," SP Nguroje added, reaffirming the police's commitment to public safety.
Broader Context: Drug Abuse and Societal Violence
This incident has highlighted concerns raised by the Adamawa State government regarding the role of substance abuse in fueling violence. Officials have previously linked drug abuse to the rising cases of gender-based violence, armed robbery, and general insecurity in the state.
The victim's testimony supports this connection, as she directly attributed her brother's violent behavior to his addiction. The case underscores the complex interplay between domestic disputes, mental health, substance abuse, and the justice system's role in protecting vulnerable individuals, particularly women.
As the investigation continues, this event serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for effective measures to combat domestic violence and support victims in seeking justice beyond traditional family arbitration.
