Anambra Agency Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Revenue Collectors

The Anambra State Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency (SASA) has significantly escalated its efforts to combat illegal revenue collection across the state, leading to the arrest and prosecution of multiple suspects. This crackdown aims to enforce laws against extortion and unlawful levies, as disclosed by the agency's media aide, Karen James, during a press briefing at SASA headquarters in Onitsha.

Suspects Arrested and Arraigned in Mobile Court

Two of the key suspects identified in this operation are Michael Uwaoma and Ndubuisi Aniukwu. They were apprehended for allegedly extorting traders and commercial operators at Mgbuka Obosi and Umusiome Junction in Nkpor. Preliminary investigations revealed that Aniukwu acted under the directive of Anthony Onyekwelu, who reportedly imposed a daily remittance target on the illegal activities.

The suspects were promptly arraigned before a magistrate court, where they were remanded in a correctional facility pending the determination of their case. The court granted bail under stringent conditions, including a N100,000 bail bond, a N300,000 fine, and the requirement of a verified Level 17 civil servant as surety. The case has been adjourned to June 3, 2026, for further hearing, underscoring the judicial process's thoroughness.

Additional Arrests and Agency's Zero-Tolerance Stance

In a related development, SASA operatives recently arrested three additional suspects in separate operations within Onitsha and its surrounding areas. This highlights the agency's ongoing and widespread efforts to curb illegal activities. Karen James reiterated SASA's zero-tolerance stance on illegal levies and extortion, emphasizing its commitment to restoring order and protecting legitimate businesses from harassment.

The agency has called on members of the public to remain vigilant and report any incidents of illegal collection or harassment to the appropriate authorities. This collaborative approach is seen as crucial in maintaining a safe and lawful business environment in Anambra State.

Overall, SASA's intensified crackdown reflects a broader initiative to uphold justice and economic integrity, ensuring that revenue collection processes are transparent and lawful for all stakeholders involved.
