Anambra Anti-Touting Agency Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Revenue Collectors

The Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency (SASA) in Anambra State has significantly escalated its operations against suspected illegal revenue collectors throughout the region. This renewed effort aims to enforce laws designed to eliminate extortion and unauthorized fee collection, with several suspects already facing legal proceedings before a mobile court.

Arrests and Prosecutions Underway

Speaking to journalists at the agency's headquarters in Onitsha over the weekend, Karen James, the Media Aide to SASA, confirmed the agency's unwavering commitment to its mandate. She emphasized that SASA is dedicated to restoring order, protecting legitimate businesses, and ensuring a safe, lawful environment for residents and traders across Anambra State.

James identified two of the apprehended suspects as Michael Uwaoma and Mr. Ndubuisi Aniukwu. Uwaoma was allegedly caught extorting traders at Mgbuka Obosi, while Aniukwu was reportedly involved in similar activities at Umusiome Junction in Nkpor. Preliminary investigations suggest that Aniukwu was acting under the direction of Mr. Anthony Onyekwelu, who had imposed a daily remittance target on him.

Legal Proceedings and Strict Bail Conditions

Following their arrests, the suspects were arraigned before a competent Magistrate Court. The court remanded them in a correctional facility pending the determination of their cases. In a significant development, the court granted bail under stringent conditions, including:

  • A ₦100,000 bail bond
  • A ₦300,000 fine
  • The requirement of a verified Level 17 civil servant as surety

The case has been adjourned to June 3, 2026, for further hearing, highlighting the judicial system's involvement in addressing these offenses.

Zero-Tolerance Stance and Public Cooperation

In line with its mandate, SASA operatives recently arrested three additional suspects in separate operations within Onitsha and its surrounding areas. The agency reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against illegal levies and extortion, stressing that such activities undermine economic stability and public safety.

James urged members of the public to report any incidents of illegal revenue collection or extortion to the authorities. This call for cooperation is part of a broader strategy to empower communities and enhance enforcement efforts, ensuring that Anambra State remains free from unauthorized financial exploitation.

The agency's actions reflect a proactive approach to governance under the administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, aiming to foster a transparent and lawful business environment. By imposing fines and strict bail conditions, SASA sends a clear message that illegal revenue collection will not be tolerated, with ongoing operations expected to continue across the state.
