Anambra Police Arrest Suspects in Family Shallow Grave Murder

The Anambra State Police Command has received widespread praise from residents of the Ukpor community in Nnewi South Local Government Area for its diligent efforts in apprehending suspects linked to the brutal murder of a family whose remains were discovered in a shallow grave. The command, led by Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu, has been commended for its swift action in cracking the case.

Arrests and Investigation

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed that operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) from Awkuzu arrested two suspects on Sunday, May 3, following a detailed investigation into the disappearance of three family members. The suspects, identified as Emmanuel Nnabueze Nnakezie (33) and Clement Nnaekezie (69), were tracked and apprehended in Oba and Ukpor communities. During interrogation, they allegedly confessed to the crime and led police to a shallow grave where the victims were buried.

The remains of the victims—Robert Nnakezie (67), Ikechukwu Obi (14), and Ukamaka Efione (2)—were exhumed and deposited in a morgue for autopsy. The discovery of the two-year-old child's body has particularly shocked the community.

Community Reactions

A community leader from Amihe village in Ukpor, who identified himself only as Amechi, expressed admiration for the police's investigative work. "I must commend the police in this state for the job they are doing. Honestly, they are bracing up to their responsibilities. I can't even figure out how they're able to solve this puzzle," he said. He noted that Ukpor has been grappling with issues of unknown gunmen, kidnappings, and other violent crimes, but expressed hope that the police's efforts would help manage the situation.

Another resident, Virginia Ukeje, praised the police but called for stricter measures. She suggested that the police and state government should consider implementing immediate capital punishment for perpetrators of violent crimes. "Steady surveillance will help in the arrest of criminal elements in the community and its environs," she added.

Simon Ukala, a third resident, emphasized the need for thorough surveillance. "These evil people are not living in the bushes alone. They're also living among us—going to farms and markets, attending churches, but they aim to monitor people and their surroundings. Police should find a way to monitor and arrest such people. They should also think of how they will hire trusted people within the community, who can help them in identifying and tracking these bad people," he suggested.

Calls for Enhanced Security

Residents have urged the police commissioner to intensify stop-and-search operations in Ukpor and other communities in Nnewi South LGA. Some have also recommended the use of drone surveillance to locate criminal hideouts and dismantle their camps. The community remains on edge, but the recent police breakthrough has brought a measure of relief.
