A four-year-old boy who was allegedly killed and partially eaten by his mother had been referred to authorities three times due to concerns about her drug-induced psychosis, according to new reports. The 32-year-old mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, walked into Wyong Police Station on the NSW Central Coast on Saturday, July 4, and allegedly told officers she had consumed parts of her son.
Discovery of the Body
Police went to the family's one-bedroom community housing unit on Byron Street and found the boy dead with significant injuries to his arms. It is believed he had been dead for several days before the alarm was raised. The apartment building remained cordoned off on Monday, July 6, two days after the mother's arrest. Soft toys and cards for the little boy were left at the front door and at the top of the driveway.
According to court documents, police will allege the mother killed her son between 4pm and 5pm on July 4. She was charged with murder and appeared in Bail Court on Saturday, July 4, where bail was formally refused. Her matter is next due in Wyong Local Court on September 1.
History of Concerns
The mother and son had moved to the area five months earlier to escape domestic violence. The Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) had been in contact with the family for at least a year prior. The most recent contact was in January 2024, when case workers assessed whether the boy, then a toddler, was at risk of serious neglect due to his mother's suspected substance abuse. However, there was not enough evidence of her alleged drug and alcohol abuse, and he was allowed to remain in her custody until his death.
News Corp reported that the little boy first came to the attention of the DCJ in early 2024 when a family member expressed concern for his welfare. At that point, the DCJ became aware of the mother's suspected drug use and psychosis episodes. She was then referred to an early intervention program that allowed him to stay in her custody.
Community Vigil
About 40 locals held a vigil for the boy at Wyong Memorial Pool on Monday afternoon. One local mother told Daily Mail that her son Jayden had played with the alleged victim at a birthday party. "He seemed really normal and happy and full of energy, but he was a shy little kid," she said. "I honestly wish we'd got to know him because my son absolutely loved playing with him." She added that the boy's mother "seemed really quiet" and "was really nice to speak to" when their children were playing together. "The mum seemed fine, the little boy seemed fine, there's nothing that stands out," she said. "It all goes back to the fact that you don't know what happens behind closed doors." At the vigil, teary-eyed children laid their favourite toys while others left Spider-Man balloons. Most locals were in disbelief over the allegations.
Domestic Violence History
The boy's mother had a number of domestic disputes with at least two members of her immediate family, dating back more than a decade. Her own mother had an apprehended violence order against her, as did another male relative.
