Delta State Police Commissioner CP Yemi Oyeniyi has upheld the findings of an orderly room trial that demoted two officers caught on a viral video receiving extorted money from a motorist via a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal at the 'C' Division police station in Asaba on January 13, 2026. Inspector Augustine Jeremiah was reduced to the rank of Sergeant, while Corporal Miracle Ehirim was demoted to Constable.
Orderly Room Trial Findings
The orderly room trial found both officers guilty of extortion, discreditable conduct, and disobedience to lawful orders under the Police Act 2020. The trial was initiated after a video circulated widely on social media showing Jeremiah and Ehirim using a POS terminal to collect money from a motorist inside the station premises.
IGP's Stance on POS Terminals in Police Formations
CP Oyeniyi reiterated that Inspector-General of Police IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu strictly prohibits the use of POS terminals or any electronic payment platforms within all police formations. He emphasized that no officer is authorized to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise, warning that any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary action.
Call for Professionalism and Public Trust
The Commissioner urged officers and men of the Command to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and respect for the rights of citizens. He noted that the disciplinary action should serve as a deterrent and reaffirmed the Command's commitment to discipline, accountability, and public trust. He also encouraged members of the public to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through the Complaint Response Unit on 09155570008 and 09011112311.
