Delta Police Officer Details Case of 17-Year-Old Student Hacking Celebrity WhatsApp Accounts and Selling Explicit Materials
A divisional police officer in the Delta State Police Command has provided a detailed account of how a 17-year-old male student was discovered to have hacked into the WhatsApp accounts of several celebrities and sold explicit materials to his classmates. The incident, which highlights growing concerns about cybercrime among youths, was uncovered during a routine investigation.
Routine Phone Check Leads to Major Discovery
The Divisional Police Officer of Ugborikoko Division in Uvwie Local Government Area, Temi Agbede-Zuokumor, disclosed the case in an interview with comedian Otaghware Onodjayeke, widely known as I Go Save. According to Agbede-Zuokumor, the investigation began when officers conducted a standard check on a student's phone at school.
She explained that the student's mother initially claimed the device belonged to his sister, but inconsistencies in her story prompted further scrutiny. "The woman looked very modest, so I asked her if she was from Deeper Life. She said no. I then asked why her son took a phone to school, and she claimed it belonged to his sister," Agbede-Zuokumor stated.
Phone Contents Reveal Extensive Criminal Activity
Suspicious aroused, officers decided to inspect the phone thoroughly. "Something told me to check the phone. When we did, we discovered that everything on the device belonged to the boy," she recounted. The examination uncovered over 80 foreign contacts, including Australian phone numbers, alongside a significant volume of explicit materials.
"We saw several foreign numbers, over 80 Australian lines, and the phone was filled with pornographic content," Agbede-Zuokumor added. Further investigation revealed that the suspect had been selling these materials to his classmates, who reportedly referred to him as "boss" in school.
Hacking of Celebrity Accounts and Financial Scams
More alarmingly, the police discovered that the teenager had gained unauthorized access to WhatsApp accounts belonging to celebrities. He allegedly used these compromised accounts to solicit money from unsuspecting victims. "We discovered he had access to WhatsApp accounts of some celebrities, which he used to demand money from unsuspecting victims," the officer disclosed.
This case underscores the sophisticated nature of cybercrimes being perpetrated by younger individuals and raises questions about digital literacy and security measures among students. The Delta State Police Command continues to investigate the full extent of the teenager's activities and any potential accomplices.
