Drug Dealer Jailed for 7 Years After Home Alone-Inspired Booby Traps
Drug Dealer Jailed for Home Alone-Style Booby Traps

A drug dealer who took inspiration from the classic Christmas film Home Alone to rig his property with dangerous booby traps has been sentenced to seven years in prison. Ian Claughton, 60, transformed his home in Grimethorpe, near Barnsley, South Yorkshire, into a hazardous fortress to protect his illegal drug operation.

Elaborate Security System Inspired by Cinema

During the trial at Sheffield Crown Court, prosecutor Helen Chapman revealed that Claughton explicitly told police he was aiming to recreate scenes from the movie Home Alone. The property was found to contain an alarming array of improvised explosive devices and weapons designed to deter intruders.

Dangerous Devices Discovered

Police officers described the houses as heavily protected when they executed search warrants in May 2024. Their discoveries included:

  • Tripwires made from fishing wire stretched across rooms at knee height
  • Homemade pipe bombs concealed in plastic piping and paint bags
  • Banger fireworks sealed inside piping with attached wires and springs
  • A stun gun hidden behind a refrigerator
  • A homemade flamethrower in a workshop area

The operation led to the evacuation of more than 100 nearby homes as authorities worked to safely neutralize the dangerous devices.

Substantial Drug Operation Uncovered

Alongside the booby traps, police uncovered evidence of a significant drug production and distribution network. Investigators found:

  • Cannabis plants growing in tents within hidden rooms at two properties
  • Large quantities of amphetamines ready for distribution
  • £27,000 in cash carefully sewn into a sofa
  • Two high-powered air guns and a crossbow

International Firearms Connection

Claughton first came to authorities' attention when UK Border Force intercepted a package containing five folding five-shot revolvers at Heathrow Airport. The parcel, ordered from China, was addressed using his ex-wife's eBay account.

Court Proceedings and Sentences

Judge Graham Reeds presided over the case at Sheffield Crown Court, where Claughton received his seven-year prison sentence. The defendant pleaded guilty to multiple charges including:

  1. Bringing a realistic imitation firearm into the country
  2. Being concerned in the production of cannabis
  3. Two counts of possession with intent to supply class B drugs

Following a separate trial at Doncaster Crown Court, Claughton was also convicted of:

  • Three counts of possessing prohibited firearms
  • Possession of criminal property
  • Possession of explosive substances

Co-Defendant Receives Suspended Sentence

Lesley Claughton, 59, the defendant's ex-wife, was found guilty of related charges including importing a realistic imitation firearm and being concerned in cannabis production. She received a 21-month prison sentence suspended for two years.

Broader Implications for Community Safety

Police officials emphasized that this case highlights significant dangers facing residential communities. The presence of organized drug activity combined with improvised explosive devices created an extremely hazardous situation that required extensive police resources to resolve safely.

The investigation revealed how drug dealers are employing increasingly sophisticated and dangerous methods to protect their illegal operations, putting innocent neighbors and first responders at serious risk.
