DSS Apprehends Suspected Gunrunner with 850 Live Bullets in Cross River Operation
Operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, have successfully arrested a suspected gunrunner identified as Kelvin Ebikeniye Dugo, after discovering 850 rounds of live ammunition in his possession. The arrest occurred on Monday at Ivara Esu Estate within the Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State, marking a significant breakthrough in ongoing security efforts.
Details of the Arrest and Concealment Method
The suspect was apprehended shortly after taking delivery of the consignment, which was cleverly concealed within food supplies to evade detection. In addition to the ammunition, security personnel recovered two empty AK-47 magazines, indicating potential links to more extensive illegal arms activities. This method of hiding contraband highlights the sophisticated tactics employed by traffickers to bypass security checks.
Connection to Alleged Supplier in Benue State
Security sources have revealed that the ammunition was allegedly supplied by another suspected gunrunner, Azenda Barnabas, also known as Jagaban, who is based in Aliade, Benue State. This connection suggests a broader network of arms trafficking spanning multiple regions, with operatives working to trace and dismantle these illicit operations. The involvement of individuals from different states underscores the cross-border nature of this criminal activity.
DSS Statement on Nationwide Security Efforts
The DSS has emphasized that this operation is part of sustained nationwide efforts to dismantle arms trafficking networks and curb the spread of illegal weapons. In a statement, the agency reiterated its commitment to enhancing public safety and combating crime through proactive intelligence-led operations. Such initiatives are crucial in addressing the rising concerns over insecurity and violence linked to illicit arms.
The arrest serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in securing communities against gunrunning and related crimes. Authorities continue to urge citizens to report suspicious activities, as collaborative efforts between security agencies and the public are essential in maintaining peace and order across Nigeria.
