Edo Family Halts Burial Over Missing Eyes, Accepts Chemical Damage Explanation
Last Friday, a dramatic scene unfolded in Edo state as a family came close to canceling the funeral of their loved one after discovering that her eyes were missing from her corpse. The incident occurred when the family visited the morgue to collect the body on the day of the burial, only to make the shocking find.
Discovery and Initial Dispute
According to MC Oviakpo, a friend of the deceased's husband, the family was preparing for the funeral when they noticed the absence of the eyes. Upon inquiry, a mortuary attendant explained that the eyes had dissolved due to chemicals used to wash the corpse during the embalming process. However, the family dismissed this explanation, insisting that the husband must provide the body in the complete form he had married her, with the eyes intact, before the funeral could proceed.
Medical Intervention and Resolution
After much argument and tension, the family invited a doctor to conduct a thorough examination. The doctor confirmed that the eyes had been affected by the chemicals used in the embalming process, compounded by the corpse's nine-month stay in the mortuary. This professional assessment led the family to accept the explanation and agree to proceed with the funeral, resolving the standoff.
The incident highlights the emotional and logistical challenges families can face in funeral preparations, especially when dealing with unexpected issues in mortuary settings.
