Edo Police Command Achieves Major Breakthrough in Kidnapping Case

The Edo State Police Command has successfully dismantled a dangerous kidnap syndicate, leading to the arrest of key suspects and the recovery of a decomposing body from a forest. This significant operation, disclosed by the command's spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, on March 3, 2026, marks a crucial victory in the fight against crime in the region.

Details of the Kidnapping Incident

According to the police report, the incident began on February 4, 2026, when two individuals, Edafe Oghenekome, a 42-year-old pineapple farmer, and Favor Ighasa, were abducted from their residence in Utese Village, Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State. The abductors demanded a ransom of N50 million for their release.

Favor Ighasa managed to regain her freedom on February 9, 2026, after a ransom payment was made. However, the kidnappers ceased all communication regarding the release of Edafe Oghenekome, raising serious concerns about his safety.

Police Investigation and Arrests

In response to the kidnapping report filed on February 11, 2026, the Edo State Police Command, under the firm directives of Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika, launched a comprehensive investigation. The sustained efforts of the operatives led to the arrest of one Abdulsalam Mohammadu, aged 21.

During interrogation, Mohammadu disclosed the involvement of additional gang members, including Kehinde Adetunji, aged 45, who served as the syndicate's local informant and pointer, being an indigene of the community. Another suspect, Nasiru Yau, aged 24, was identified as the person responsible for bringing food to the gang in the bush.

All arrested suspects have confessed to their roles in the kidnapping, ransom collection, and the murder of Edafe Oghenekome, providing critical information that advanced the investigation.

Recovery of Weapons and Victim's Body

The police investigation further led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles with breach numbers 1686 and 2357, as well as three Dane guns from the suspects. In a tragic discovery, diligent investigative work resulted in the recovery of the remains of Edafe Oghenekome from Igueladidi forest in Iguobazuwa, where he had been left to decompose.

Ongoing Efforts and Public Appeal

The Edo State Police Command has intensified its efforts to apprehend the remaining fleeing members of the syndicate who are still at large. The command assures the public that all individuals connected to this heinous crime will be brought to justice, emphasizing their commitment to thorough investigations in kidnapping cases.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies with credible and timely information to help prevent such crimes in the future. This operation highlights the police's resilience in tackling security challenges and bringing perpetrators to book.
