EFCC Busts Cybercrime Academy in Abuja, Apprehends 31 Suspects
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) executed a major operation on Thursday, April 9, targeting an internet fraud academy located in Becki Estate, Karu, within the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja. In this decisive sting, the anti-graft agency successfully arrested a total of 31 individuals suspected of involvement in internet fraud activities.
Details of the Arrest and Seized Items
Among those apprehended were two alleged kingpins and a group of interns who were actively participating in cyber fraud tutorials at the time of the raid. The EFCC operatives recovered a significant cache of electronic devices from the scene, including 18 laptop computers, numerous mobile phones, and various other gadgets used in the commission of online crimes.
Investigation Reveals Deceptive Recruitment Tactics
According to an official statement released by the EFCC, the investigation uncovered that some of the interns had been lured from Benue State by the academy's proprietors under false pretenses. These individuals were promised legitimate job opportunities, but upon arrival at the facility, they were instead provided with communication devices, computers, and specialized software to begin training in cyber fraud schemes.
Harsh Conditions and Coercive Practices at the Academy
The statement further detailed the oppressive environment maintained by the academy's operators. To ensure compliance and dedication from the recruits, the proprietors housed them on-site and strictly restricted their movements to the facility's perimeters. In a move to isolate them completely, the operators forcibly confiscated the interns' personal mobile phones, effectively cutting off all contact with the outside world.
Moreover, the agency reported that corporal punishment was routinely administered, with physical assaults being used against interns who were perceived as recalcitrant or uncooperative during their training sessions.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigations
The EFCC has confirmed that all 31 suspects will be formally charged in court once the ongoing investigations are fully concluded. This operation underscores the commission's continued efforts to combat cybercrime and dismantle organized fraud networks operating within Nigeria.
