Final Evacuation Call Issued
The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a final evacuation call for Nigerians living in South Africa, following a resurgence of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals. The directive was announced by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) on Monday, urging all citizens who wish to return home to register immediately.
Registration Deadline and Process
According to a statement by NiDCOM spokesperson Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the registration portal will close on Friday, July 10, 2026. Interested Nigerians are required to fill an online form on the NiDCOM website and submit their details. The government will then arrange flights for the evacuees, with priority given to those in distress.
Background of Xenophobic Attacks
The call comes after several incidents of violence against Nigerian businesses and individuals in South Africa, including looting of shops and physical assaults. The Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria confirmed at least 12 cases of attacks in the past week, with no fatalities reported so far.
Government Assurance
NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa assured that the government is committed to the safety of all Nigerians abroad. “We will not leave any Nigerian behind. This is a final opportunity for those who feel unsafe to return home,” she said. The evacuation is voluntary, and those who choose to stay are advised to remain vigilant.
Previous Evacuation Efforts
This is not the first time Nigeria has evacuated citizens from South Africa due to xenophobia. In 2019, over 600 Nigerians were repatriated following similar attacks. The current operation is expected to be smaller, but the government has not disclosed the estimated number of returnees.
Diplomatic Reactions
The Nigerian government has also summoned the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria to express displeasure over the attacks. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that Nigeria will take necessary measures to protect its citizens, including possible economic sanctions if the situation escalates.
