Former NURTW Boss Murdered in Osogbo Attack

A former chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has been murdered in a violent attack in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State.

Details of the Fatal Attack

Kazeem Oyewole, who served as the part-time chairman of the NURTW Aregbe Unit from 2018 to 2022, was killed on Sunday, January 18, 2026. The incident occurred around the Elelede Junction area of the city.

According to an eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity, the violence erupted after a group of suspected hoodlums had stationed themselves at the junction. They were allegedly extorting money from passersby, claiming it was for a planned carnival.

The situation escalated when a motorcycle carrying two passengers arrived at the scene. The hoodlums forced the two men off the bike and a physical confrontation began.

Eyewitness Account of the Brutality

"I heard gunshots," the resident recounted. "They later identified one of the two persons who were attacked as Kazeem. Later, they brought big stones and smashed the head of the man identified as Kazeem. He died on the spot."

The witness added that the second victim managed to escape from the scene with an open wound. The assailants fled the area before police officers could arrive.

Community Reaction and Police Investigation

The violent incident caused a sudden disruption of business activities around Elelede Junction. A shop owner in the area, Basira, confirmed that the victim was identified as Oyewole by fellow NURTW members who came to the scene after the attack.

The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the killing and launched an investigation. The Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, stated that officers were deployed immediately after receiving information about the incident.

"We are aware of the incident that happened at Orita Elelede, and we deployed our men to the place immediately after the information got to us, but unfortunately, one person was confirmed dead. He was identified as Kazeem. Investigation has commenced," Ojelabi said.

When asked about measures to prevent escalation, particularly around motor parks, the PPRO noted, "We are still monitoring the situation. We are going to monitor the parks for now."

Ongoing Security Concerns

This brutal murder has raised fresh concerns about public safety and the activities of criminal elements in parts of Osogbo. The attack, which occurred in broad daylight at a busy junction, highlights the audacity of the perpetrators.

The police have urged anyone with useful information to come forward to aid their investigation into the killing of the former transport union leader.
