Lagos Arraigns Man for Land Grabbing and Property Damage in High Court Case
The Lagos State Government has formally arraigned Olusola Shedrach before the Lagos State High Court, which is currently sitting in Ikeja. The charges stem from allegations of forceful takeover and destruction of property, marking a significant legal action in the state's ongoing efforts to combat land-related crimes.
Details of the Charges and Legal Proceedings
Shedrach was brought before Justice Hakeem Oshodi on a three-count charge filed by the state. The charges specifically border on land grabbing, wilful damage, and conduct likely to breach public peace. According to the prosecution, the defendant forcefully took possession of a church property belonging to Harvesters Church, located along the Gbagada–Oworonshoki Expressway. This alleged offence is said to contravene Section 2(1) of the Lagos State Properties Protection Law, 2016, which aims to protect property rights and prevent illegal seizures.
In addition to the land grabbing charge, Shedrach was accused of wilfully damaging property on the site. This offence is punishable under Section 350 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which addresses acts of vandalism and destruction. The state further alleged that his actions amounted to conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, contrary to Section 168(d) of the same law, highlighting the potential for public disturbance and unrest.
Court Hearing and Defendant's Plea
During the hearing, the state prosecutor, Mrs Olufunmilayo Aluko, applied for the defendant's plea to be taken, and the court granted this request. The charges were read aloud in the courtroom, and Shedrach pleaded not guilty to all counts. This plea sets the stage for a full trial, where evidence will be presented and examined to determine the validity of the allegations.
Following the plea, the defence counsel, Mr O. Odueso, sought a short adjournment to enable the defence team to file and argue a bail application. This move is common in such cases, as it allows the defendant to prepare for trial while potentially securing temporary release under specific conditions.
Adjournment and Future Court Dates
Justice Oshodi adjourned the matter to April 22, 2026, specifically for the hearing of the bail application. This date provides a timeline for the next step in the legal process, focusing on whether Shedrach will be granted bail pending trial. Meanwhile, the trial itself is scheduled to commence on June 17, 2027, indicating a lengthy legal journey ahead as the court delves into the details of the case.
The case underscores the Lagos State Government's commitment to enforcing laws against land grabbing and property damage, which are critical issues in urban areas like Lagos. By pursuing such charges, authorities aim to deter similar actions and uphold property rights, ensuring public order and safety.
