The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) digitally captured 38,000 traffic offenders in the second quarter of 2026, marking a 15% increase from the 33,000 recorded in the first quarter. This surge is attributed to the deployment of advanced digital enforcement technologies across the state.
Digital Enforcement Drives Increase
LASTMA's General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oke, announced the figures at a press briefing in Lagos on Monday. He stated that the agency's new digital platform, which integrates automated plate recognition and real-time monitoring, has significantly improved the detection and processing of traffic violations. “Our digital transformation has enabled us to capture more offenders without the need for physical stops, reducing corruption and human error,” Bakare-Oke said.
The breakdown of offenses includes speeding (12,000 cases), illegal parking (8,500), lane indiscipline (7,200), and driving without a valid license (5,300). The remaining 5,000 cases cover other violations such as failure to use seatbelts and mobile phone use while driving.
Impact on Road Safety
LASTMA reported a corresponding 10% reduction in road traffic accidents in Lagos during Q2 2026, compared to the same period last year. The agency attributes this improvement to the deterrent effect of the digital enforcement system. “We are seeing a behavioral change among motorists who now know they can be caught anytime,” Bakare-Oke added.
The digital system also allows offenders to pay fines online, reducing the need for physical visits to LASTMA offices. Over 25,000 offenders have used the online payment portal since its launch in April 2026.
Challenges and Future Plans
Despite the success, LASTMA faces challenges including network glitches and public skepticism. Some motorists have complained about erroneous tickets. Bakare-Oke acknowledged these issues, stating that the agency has set up a dedicated helpline and review committee to handle disputes. “We are continuously improving the system to ensure accuracy and fairness,” he said.
Looking ahead, LASTMA plans to expand its digital coverage to all major highways and interchanges in Lagos by the end of 2026. The agency also aims to integrate its database with the Lagos State Vehicle Registration System to further streamline enforcement.
