Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has called for stiffer penalties for vandals of electricity infrastructure and other assets across Nigeria. The governor made the call on Friday following a meeting with the Chairman of SIFAX Group, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, and the Managing Director and CEO of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), Mr. Deolu Ijose.
Strategic Discussions on Power Infrastructure
During the meeting, the Ogun State Government reaffirmed its commitment to improving electricity supply across the state. The discussions focused on strengthening power infrastructure and expanding access to stable electricity for communities and industrial clusters.
In a post on his official X account, Governor Abiodun expressed serious concern over the increasing cases of vandalization of public electricity infrastructure. He described the destruction of power facilities and public assets as economic sabotage that undermines development and service delivery.
Legal Framework to Be Strengthened
In response to the growing menace, the governor directed the Office of the Attorney General to work on a stronger legal framework. This framework will prescribe stiffer penalties for vandals and serve as a deterrent against the destruction of critical infrastructure across the state.
Governor Abiodun emphasized that his administration remains committed to deepening collaborations with IBEDC and other stakeholders in the power sector. The goal is to achieve sustainable electricity supply, improve the ease of doing business, support industries, and enhance the overall quality of life for the people.
Economic Growth and Industrial Hub Status
The governor expressed optimism that these renewed partnerships will further drive economic growth and strengthen Ogun State's position as Nigeria's leading industrial hub. He reiterated the importance of protecting public assets to ensure continued progress and development.
