The Ogun State Police Command has initiated an internal investigation after a disturbing video showing the physical assault of popular Afrobeats singer Habeeb Okikiola, known as Portable, while in police detention went viral online.
Viral Footage Sparks Public Outrage
The video, which surfaced on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, January 12, 2026, shows the "Zazu" singer shirtless and handcuffed. In the footage, Portable is seated on a couch within what appears to be a police facility, tearfully pleading as he is allegedly struck by a police personnel. The clip quickly ignited widespread condemnation from human rights activists and fans, fueling ongoing national debates about police misconduct and the treatment of individuals in custody.
Arrest Linked to Domestic Dispute Allegation
Portable's detention stems from an alleged assault incident involving Omobolarinde Akinyanju, also known as Ashabi Simple. The altercation reportedly occurred on January 1, 2026, at the singer's bar in Ogun State during a dispute related to their domestic relationship. The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the singer's arrest and that he remains in custody.
Police Condemn Action, Promise Sanctions
However, DSP Babaseyi strongly condemned the assault captured in the viral video, stating it violates official police conduct standards. "We don't condone it," he asserted. He further clarified that police protocols forbid filming suspects and publicly displaying their faces. The PPRO emphasized that no suspect, regardless of identity, should be subjected to such treatment.
He confirmed that an internal inquiry is actively underway to investigate the incident. "The investigation is ongoing, and the officers involved, if found culpable, will be sent to the appropriate authorities. That process has already started," Babaseyi assured the public.
Portable, a Nigerian singer, rapper, and songwriter, rose to mainstream fame in 2021 with his hit single "Zazoo Zehh," featuring Olamide and Poco Lee. He is renowned for his "street-hop" musical style and his prolific use of social media to engage with the public.
