Police Arrest Suspect Over Murder of 6-Year-Old Girl, Recover Severed Head in Ibadan
The Oyo State Police Command has made a significant arrest in connection with the brutal murder of a six-year-old girl in Ibadan, recovering the victim's severed head from the suspect's possession. The incident, which occurred on Saturday at Adigun Village in the Olorunda Ogunsola area, has ignited widespread outrage and concern among local residents.
Details of the Arrest and Investigation
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the Command disclosed that it received intelligence regarding the killing of a young girl and the discovery of her severed head with one Sodiq Kayode Akorede, a 23-year-old suspect. Acting swiftly on this report, the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, ordered the immediate deployment of operatives to the scene to rescue the suspect and secure crucial evidence.
Upon arrival, police operatives encountered resistance from an angry mob but managed to rescue and arrest the suspect with professionalism and restraint. During the operation, they successfully recovered the severed head of the victim. Preliminary investigations have identified the deceased as six-year-old Mutiyatu Sunday. The suspect allegedly confessed to the crime during interrogation, admitting to killing the child and severing her head before his apprehension.
Aftermath and Police Response
The suspect, who sustained injuries from mob action, has been taken to a medical facility for treatment. He is set to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation and prosecution. The Oyo State Police Command strongly condemned attempts at jungle justice, emphasizing that such actions undermine proper investigation processes and the administration of justice.
In its statement, the Command assured residents that the case will be thoroughly investigated to ensure justice is served. It urged the public to remain law-abiding and to report any suspicious activities to security agencies, reinforcing the importance of due process in criminal matters.
