Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully rescued three kidnap victims during a counter-kidnapping operation in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State. The operation was conducted by personnel of the 34 Artillery Brigade deployed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Izombe, in collaboration with local security outfits from Izombe.
Details of the Operation
According to security consultant and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, who released a statement on Saturday, the operation took place at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 22, 2026. It was initiated following a distress call reporting suspected kidnapping activities along the Oguta–Owerri road.
Security sources disclosed that the troops made contact with the kidnappers inside Okohia Umueju Forest, where four victims were being held captive. Upon sighting the troops, the criminals reportedly fled, abandoning three of the victims who were subsequently rescued. However, one victim was killed by the abductors while attempting to escape.
Recovered Items
Items recovered from the scene included the sum of ₦987,500, five mobile phones, and two power banks. The rescued victims and recovered items were handed over to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for further investigation and necessary action.
Ongoing Efforts
According to Makama, military authorities have stated that efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend the fleeing suspects. The successful operation highlights the continued commitment of the Nigerian Army to combat kidnapping and ensure the safety of citizens in the region.
