UK Army Publishes Full-time Soldier Requirements, Training Details

The United Kingdom military has disclosed the requirements for individuals interested in joining the army as full-time soldiers. Information published on the official UK Army website outlines various entry pathways, including for junior soldiers and regular soldiers, as well as details about training programs.

How to Join as a Junior Soldier

Individuals aged 16 and above can join the Army as junior soldiers. They begin their career at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate, where they learn military skills and soldiering techniques. Additionally, they receive education in civilian subjects such as ICT, Maths, and English if needed. Junior soldiers serve until they turn 18 and can then transition to regular soldier status.

Requirements for Regular Soldiers

People can join the Army as regular soldiers from the age of 18. They start with basic training at the Soldier Academy, which provides high-standard military training delivered by professional trainers. The training aims to build character, mental and physical resilience, and instill the Army's core values. The specific training center depends on the corps the recruit joins. All standard entry recruits train at the Soldier Academy.

Armed Forces Foundation Scheme

The Armed Forces Foundation Scheme (AFFS) allows individuals to join the Army as soldiers for an 18-month fully paid period. Participants complete full training, gain real experience in a unit, and experience Army life before deciding on a long-term career. From day one, trainees are paid and part of a team. The salary is £24,149.04 (approximately N44,042,681), with benefits including a pension, healthcare, free gyms, subsidized food and accommodation, and travel opportunities overseas.

Roles Available in the AFFS

The scheme is open for selected soldier roles in the infantry (excluding Paratrooper and The Guards), Royal Artillery, Royal Logistic Corps (Supply Chain Operative), and Adjutant General's Corps (HR specialist). These roles allow individuals to complete full training and gain unit experience during the 18 months.
