FBI Issues Urgent Warning Over Iranian Drone Attack Plot Targeting California
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has distributed an urgent security alert to law enforcement agencies throughout California regarding a potential drone attack allegedly connected to Iran. This critical warning follows intelligence indicating that Iranian authorities may be planning to deploy unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel positioned off the United States coastline.
Intelligence Details and Escalating Tensions
According to an internal FBI memorandum, intelligence gathered in early February suggested Iran was considering launching a surprise drone attack on unspecified locations within California. This alleged plot emerged as a potential retaliation if the United States carried out military strikes against Iran. The tensions have significantly escalated following recent U.S. military actions that resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader last month.
Investigators highlighted that the potential attack could involve Iranian-manufactured drones, specifically models like the Shahed-136, which are often described as "kamikaze drones" due to their one-way attack capabilities. The alert, circulated to police departments statewide, did not specify potential targets. Officials also stated they currently lack additional details concerning the timing, execution methods, or individuals responsible for the alleged scheme.
California's Demographic Context and Official Responses
Authorities noted that California hosts the largest concentration of Iranian dissidents and Iranian-Americans in the United States, with estimates reaching approximately 500,000 individuals. However, it remains unclear whether this demographic factor influenced the alleged attack plan.
California Governor Gavin Newsom addressed the warning during a press briefing, labeling the threat as "critical". He confirmed that state authorities were already aware of the intelligence and are collaborating closely with the State Operations Center to monitor the situation vigilantly. Newsom added that he had not yet discussed the issue directly with former President Donald Trump but urged federal leaders to communicate transparently with the American public about the situation and associated risks.
Contrasting Federal Perspectives and Regional Escalation
Despite the FBI's alert, former President Donald Trump told reporters he was not concerned about the possibility of Iranian attacks on U.S. soil. Meanwhile, a threat assessment prepared by the Office of Intelligence and Analysis at the Department of Homeland Security suggested that Iran and its allied groups could pose a threat of targeted attacks, although a large-scale assault on the United States remains improbable.
Concurrently, tensions in the Middle East have continued to intensify. Several vessels were reportedly attacked near the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global oil shipping route. Among the affected ships was the Thai-flagged cargo vessel Mayuree Naree, which reported an engine room fire forcing crew evacuation.
Claim of Responsibility and Broader Implications
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for the attack, stating the ship had ignored warnings from Iranian authorities to avoid the strategic waterway. These incidents occurred as Iran vowed to launch what it described as its "most intense operation" since the conflict began, raising concerns that the crisis could further disrupt global shipping and energy markets.
In response, the United States Central Command issued a warning advising civilians to avoid port facilities in Iran where naval forces are operating, noting such locations could become legitimate military targets under international law. CENTCOM emphasized that U.S. forces would continue taking precautions to minimize civilian harm but could not guarantee safety near facilities utilized by Iranian military forces.
