US Official Confirms Iran-Linked Hackers Breached FBI Director's Emails
A US Justice Department official has confirmed that Iran-linked hackers successfully breached the personal email inbox of FBI Director Kash Patel. The cyberattack, claimed by the group known as Handala Hack Team, resulted in the publication of photographs and documents online, with the hackers declaring Patel as one of their victims.
Justice Department Confirms Authenticity of Breach
According to official statements, a Justice Department representative verified that Patel's email had indeed been compromised. The official noted that the material released by the hackers appeared to be authentic, though the FBI has not yet issued an official comment on the incident. The hackers themselves did not respond to messages seeking clarification about their claims.
Who Are the Handala Hackers?
Handala describes itself as a pro-Palestinian vigilante group, but Western cybersecurity researchers believe it operates as one of several personas used by Iranian government cyberintelligence units. The group has been linked to previous cyberattacks, including a claim on March 11 that it hacked Michigan-based medical devices provider Stryker, allegedly deleting significant amounts of company data.
Authenticity of Leaked Material
While Reuters reported it could not independently verify the authenticity of Patel's emails, the targeted Gmail address matches one previously associated with Patel in past breaches tracked by dark web intelligence firm District 4 Labs. A sample of the leaked material reviewed by Reuters appears to include both personal and work-related correspondence dating between 2010 and 2019.
Background on FBI Director Kash Patel
Kash Patel is an American lawyer and government official who became Director of the FBI on February 20, 2025, under President Donald Trump. His career includes:
- Studying criminal justice and history at the University of Richmond
- Earning a law degree in New York

Growing Cybersecurity Threats
This incident highlights the increasing threat posed by state-linked hacker groups targeting high-ranking officials. The breach underscores the vulnerability of sensitive personal and professional information to sophisticated cyberattacks, even among those with significant security resources at their disposal.
The cyberattack comes amid ongoing security concerns, following recent reports of a US Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker crashing in western Iraq on March 12. US officials confirmed that incident was not due to hostile fire, with rescue efforts ongoing for the at least five crew members aboard.
