Lagos State Unveils Strategic Cybersecurity Framework to Fortify Digital Ecosystem
The Lagos State Government has officially launched a comprehensive set of Cybersecurity Guidelines, establishing a strategic framework aimed at significantly enhancing digital safety for businesses, public institutions, and all residents. This initiative marks a pivotal advancement in the state's ongoing mission to transform into a SMART, secure, and globally competitive digital hub.
Addressing Growing Cyber Risks in Africa's Tech Capital
As Africa's fastest-growing technology ecosystem, Lagos is home to thousands of enterprises, but this rapid growth has also increased exposure to cyber threats. According to estimates from the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Nigeria suffers annual losses exceeding $500 million, approximately N250 billion, due to cybercrime. This staggering figure underscores the critical need for robust and coordinated security measures across the digital landscape.
The newly issued guidelines acknowledge that while Lagos is evolving into a SMART City, this progress brings heightened vulnerability to cyber threats. The framework is designed to provide clear, practical, and scalable cybersecurity best practices tailored for small businesses, medium and large enterprises, and Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
Alignment with National Frameworks and Empowering Stakeholders
These guidelines are carefully aligned with key national regulatory frameworks, including the Cybercrime Act of 2024, the Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023, and the National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy from 2021. Importantly, the document emphasizes that these recommendations are not intended as regulatory mandates but rather as essential tools to empower stakeholders with practical, context-specific guidance.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Salau, highlighted that this development represents another decisive step in Lagos' commitment to fostering a secure digital environment that promotes innovation, investment, and public trust.
