NIMC Issues Urgent Warning Over Fake NIN Data Correction Portal
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a stern warning to Nigerians regarding a fraudulent online flyer circulating on social media platforms. The fake flyer falsely claims that a free NIN data correction portal has been opened by the commission.
Official Statement and Clarification
In a recent post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, NIMC explicitly disowned the viral flyer, which features the logos of both NIMC and the federal government. The agency, led by Engineer Abisoye Coker-Odusote, confirmed that the flyer is completely fake and should be disregarded by the public.
The commission stated: "The public is hereby advised not to use the above for modifying their NIN data. All modifications should only be done via the official channel: https://selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng."
NIMC emphasized that citizens must safeguard their identities and remain vigilant against such scams that attempt to harvest personal information through deceptive means.
Ongoing Ward-Level Enrolment Drive
Meanwhile, NIMC confirmed that its Ward-Level Enrolment Drive, which officially commenced on Monday, February 16, 2026, is progressing steadily across the federation. This decentralized exercise allows citizens and residents to register for their National Identification Number at designated ward enrolment centres.
The commission reiterated that the NIN remains a foundational requirement for accessing critical government services in Nigeria and encouraged those who have not yet enrolled to participate in the ongoing registration exercise.
Kayode Adegoke, head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, provided guidance in a statement, urging members of the public to:
- Check the NIMC website for the nearest enrolment point
- Cooperate with officials during registration
- Provide accurate information during the registration process
- Follow NIMC's official communication channels, including social media accounts, for verified updates
Diaspora Expansion Plans
In related developments, Nigeria's drive to build a robust and inclusive digital identity system has gained fresh momentum as NIMC unveiled plans to significantly expand NIN enrolment for citizens living abroad.
This initiative follows President Bola Tinubu's recent state visit to the United Kingdom, where top government officials, including NIMC Director-General Abisoye Coker-Odusote, used high-level engagements to strengthen cooperation in digital innovation and identity management.
According to NIMC's statement, the agency's renewed push focuses on aggressively expanding NIN enrolment infrastructure across the UK, one of the largest hubs of Nigerian migrants. The plan includes opening additional enrolment centres, streamlining verification processes, and deploying more efficient digital platforms to address long-standing bottlenecks.
Current NIN Registration Statistics
As of December 2025, NIMC reported that 127 million Nigerians have been enrolled in the NIN database. Lagos state leads nationwide enrolment with over 13 million registered residents. The enrolment figures show a near-equal distribution between northern and southern Nigeria, indicating widespread participation across the country.
The federal government continues to emphasize the importance of the National Identification Number as a critical component of Nigeria's digital identity infrastructure, urging all citizens to ensure their registration is complete and accurate through official channels only.
