ECOWAS and UNODC Boost Drug Treatment in Adamawa with N200 Million Equipment Donation
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), has made a significant contribution to drug treatment efforts in Adamawa State. During a handover ceremony held in Yola, equipment valued at approximately N200 million was donated to support rehabilitation and treatment services for individuals affected by drug use.
Enhancing Rehabilitation Services Through Strategic Support
Daniel Amankwa, the Head of the ECOWAS Drug Prevention and Control Division, highlighted that this intervention is part of ECOWAS's broader strategy to assist member states in rehabilitating drug users and facilitating their reintegration into society. He explained that Adamawa State is the fourth Nigerian state to benefit from this initiative, which aims to strengthen drug prevention and control systems across the region.
"ECOWAS has provided equipment worth 200 million to support two centres in Adamawa — the state specialist centre and the NDLEA drug treatment centre," Amankwa stated. He emphasized that the donated items are designed to enhance rehabilitation services, underscoring the importance of early intervention and sustained support for those impacted by drug use.
Local Officials Praise Timely and Impactful Donation
The Commissioner for Health and Human Services in Adamawa State, represented by Permanent Secretary Pharmacist Zira Mathias Buba, welcomed the donation, noting that it will significantly improve treatment capacity in the state's rehabilitation centers. "The donated items will enhance rehabilitation and provide a conducive environment for patients," he said, expressing optimism about the positive effects on recovery outcomes.
Aliyu Abubakar, the state commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), described the intervention as timely and crucial. He pointed out that the equipment will strengthen treatment and counselling services, helping to restore hope and comfort for individuals undergoing treatment. "The facilities will go a long way in restoring hope and comfort while receiving treatment," Abubakar remarked, adding that addressing drug abuse requires ongoing collaboration among government bodies, communities, and relevant stakeholders.
Comprehensive Equipment List to Support Rehabilitation Efforts
The donated items include a range of equipment aimed at improving the functionality and comfort of treatment centers. Key items provided are:
- Sewing machines to support vocational training and skill development for patients.
- Generators to ensure uninterrupted power supply for medical and administrative operations.
- Air conditioners to create a more comfortable and therapeutic environment for rehabilitation.
This donation underscores ECOWAS's commitment to tackling drug-related issues in West Africa and highlights the critical role of international partnerships in enhancing public health and safety initiatives.
