In a strong show of solidarity, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has declared unwavering support for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) amid escalating tensions in Nigeria's intensified war against illicit substances.
The prominent rights organization issued a stern condemnation of recent violent attacks targeting NDLEA operatives during anti-drug operations across the nation. HURIWA characterized these assaults as dangerous attempts to obstruct justice and undermine public safety.
Standing Against Lawlessness
Through its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA emphasized that attacking law enforcement officers performing their constitutional duties represents a grave threat to national security. The organization praised NDLEA's relentless efforts under Chairman/Chief Executive Officer Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd) to combat the drug epidemic plaguing Nigerian communities.
'We completely condemn these primitive attacks on NDLEA operatives who are legitimately fighting to rid our society of mind-altering substances that have destroyed millions of productive young Nigerians,' HURIWA stated emphatically.
Support for Marwa's Leadership
The rights group specifically endorsed Brig. Gen. Marwa's strategic approach to the drug war, acknowledging the significant progress made since his appointment. HURIWA highlighted the importance of sustaining this momentum despite resistance from drug cartels and their supporters.
'We stand solidly behind the NDLEA and the leadership of Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa because the war against drugs is a necessary war that must be won to save our future generations from self-destruction,' the organization affirmed.
Call for Enhanced Security Measures
HURIWA urged security agencies to implement stronger protection protocols for NDLEA personnel during operations in high-risk areas. The group also called for thorough investigations and prosecution of those responsible for attacking anti-drug operatives.
The organization's strong stance comes as Nigeria intensifies its battle against drug trafficking and abuse, with recent operations yielding significant seizures and arrests despite growing resistance from criminal elements.
