Osun Court Delivers Judgment in Cannabis Trafficking Case

A Federal High Court located in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, has handed down a four-year prison sentence to a man convicted of illegal drug transportation.

The convicted individual, Musa Raji Mohammed, faced charges for moving 10.7 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa illegally. The court proceedings took place on Wednesday, with Justice Mashkur Salisu presiding over the case.

Guilty Plea and Court Proceedings

During the trial, Mohammed admitted guilt to the drug trafficking charges brought against him. The prosecution team, representing the Federal Government, was led by counsel Olufemi Ijimakin.

The case officially began on March 13, 2024, following Mohammed's formal arraignment. Court documents revealed that the offense occurred around March 1, 2024, along the Gbongan-Ibadan Expressway in Osun State.

The charge specifically cited violation of Section 11(b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act. To build their case, prosecutors presented three witnesses and submitted ten exhibits as evidence before the court.

Court's Final Ruling and Sentence

In his judgment, Justice Salisu determined that the prosecution had successfully proven their case against the defendant, leading to conviction. The judge noted that while the offense could potentially carry a life imprisonment sentence, the court decided to show leniency.

Justice Salisu emphasized that the four-year imprisonment term was imposed without an option for fine payment. He explained this decision was intended to serve as a deterrent to others who might consider engaging in similar illegal activities.

The court also issued additional orders regarding the confiscated materials. The cannabis involved in the case was directed to be destroyed, while the motorcycle used to transport the drugs was ordered forfeited to the Federal Government.
