NDLEA Chairman Marwa Charts Ambitious 2026 Course for Drug War
Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retired), the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has established definitive operational targets for the year 2026. In a powerful address, he directed agency commanders to maintain the current aggressive momentum in combating illicit substances, with a clear focus on dismantling drug cartels and expanding public sensitization campaigns across Nigeria.
Strategic Meeting Sets Tone for Unprecedented Year
The directives were delivered during the agency's annual review and planning meeting, held at the NDLEA National Headquarters in Abuja. This high-level gathering brought together the agency's top leadership, including:
- Members of the NDLEA Management
- Zonal Commanders from across the nation
- State Commanders from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory
- Commanders overseeing seaports and international airports
- The Marine Unit Commander
- Commanders of specialized Strike Force and Special Operations Units
Addressing this distinguished assembly, Marwa emphasized that the agency has commenced 2026 from a position of strength, building upon the record-breaking achievements of previous years. He declared that this year would mark a period of unprecedented consolidation, particularly in the critical areas of Drug Supply Reduction (DSR) and Drug Demand Reduction (DDR).
Clear Objectives: Disrupt Cartels and Educate Communities
"The results we achieved last year were significant, but we cannot afford to rest on our oars," Marwa stated emphatically. "Our 2026 goals are clear – we are here to completely disrupt the financial lifelines of drug cartels and ensure that every community in Nigeria is sensitised against the scourge of substance abuse."
During the comprehensive meeting, Marwa directed all commands to ensure flawless execution of the 2026 strategic work plan. He reflected on the agency's journey since he assumed leadership, noting the substantial progress made through collective effort.
"When I first assumed office, I made certain declarations about the direction of this agency and the resolve to confront drug barons and kingpins," Marwa recalled. "Looking back, the progress achieved is the result of your collective efforts, and all glory belongs to God. We have now successfully concluded five years, which passed remarkably quickly."
Building on Success with Renewed Vigor
While acknowledging past achievements, Marwa stressed the importance of not becoming complacent. "We must consolidate these gains and aim for even greater outcomes," he urged. "Today, the agency commands increased respect, both locally and internationally, and you should be proud to identify yourselves anywhere as officers and men of this agency."
Marwa attributed the renewal of his tenure by the President largely to the commanders' field work. "While I may issue directives, real impact comes from seizures made, arrests effected, and convictions secured in the field," he noted. "Without these results, there would be nothing to communicate to the public. For this reason, I sincerely appreciate your diligence, commitment, and hard work."
He emphasized that 2026 would be a year of setting clear targets, with commanders' input being essential to complement objectives already submitted by directors. Discipline and professional conduct, Marwa asserted, must remain central to all operations.
Non-Negotiable Standards and Expanded Outreach
Marwa issued a stern warning to commanders regarding operational standards. "Commanders must ensure thorough surveillance and planning before any operation," he directed. "Where operational capacity is insufficient, commanders must request reinforcement rather than risk avoidable casualties."
He highlighted the encouraging progress in advocacy and sensitization efforts, particularly in schools and communities nationwide, and called for these initiatives to be intensified. "State Drug Control Committees must be strengthened across all states, with efforts extended down to local government and ward levels," Marwa instructed. "This year, all states must have functional committees."
Marwa urged all commanders to remain focused, professional, and committed to the agency's mandate. "Together, we will continue to strengthen our impact and uphold the confidence reposed in us," he concluded.
Reassurance to the Public and Call for Collaboration
The NDLEA boss reassured Nigerians that the agency remains more committed than ever to protecting the nation's youth and families from the drug scourge. He declared that the agency's strong start to 2026 sends a clear signal to drug cartels that there will be no vacuum or breathing space for their illicit trade.
Marwa encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and continue providing useful information to the agency, reminding everyone that the fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking represents a collective responsibility for all Nigerians.
