NDDC Leads Anti-Drug Campaign in Akwa Ibom Schools
NDDC Fights Drug Abuse in Akwa Ibom Schools

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has taken a decisive stand against the growing menace of drug abuse among young people in Akwa Ibom State. In partnership with Blake and Harper Ltd, the commission launched a comprehensive state-wide sensitization campaign as part of activities marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Multi-Agency Collaboration for Prevention

The initiative, which carried the powerful theme "The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention, Break the Chain, Say No to Drug Abuse," brought together a formidable coalition of stakeholders. Coordinated through the NDDC's Akwa Ibom State office, the campaign saw participation from officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Federal Road Safety Corps, the police, school authorities, and community leaders.

The campaign featured a significant road walk that covered major locations including the NDDC office, Ewet Housing, Oron Road, Nwaniba, and Ebom Plaza. This visible demonstration aimed to raise public awareness about the dangers of substance abuse. Participants distributed educational materials, flyers, T-shirts, and caps while actively engaging residents on the critical issue.

Comprehensive Educational Approach

Beyond the awareness walk, the program incorporated multiple educational components designed to create lasting impact. Health talks, counseling sessions, and peer-mentoring programs were implemented to help young people resist peer pressure and adopt safer lifestyle choices.

Several secondary schools participated in the initiative, including Uyo High School, Community Secondary School Ikot Okubo, Offot Ukwa Secondary School, Community Secondary School Aka Offot, and Community Comprehensive Secondary School Offot Town. The program specifically targeted these educational institutions recognizing the vulnerability of school-aged youth to substance abuse.

Expert Presentations and Systemic Solutions

NDLEA officials and program coordinators from Blake and Harper Ltd delivered detailed presentations highlighting the mental, physical, academic, and social consequences of drug abuse. They emphasized that tackling the drug problem requires a systematic approach involving prevention, community vigilance, and strong collaboration with law enforcement agencies.

School leaders expressed appreciation for the intervention by NDDC and Blake and Harper Ltd, noting that such initiatives are crucial in helping students make informed choices and avoid harmful behaviors. The campaign represents a significant step toward protecting Akwa Ibom's youth from the devastating effects of substance abuse and promoting healthier community development.
