NDLEA Nabs Social Media Influencer, Accomplice Over Cannabis Brownies in Edo
NDLEA arrests influencer over cannabis-laced sweets

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Edo State have made a significant breakthrough, arresting a popular social media influencer and her accomplice for their involvement in the production and distribution of cannabis-laced confectioneries.

The Arrest and Seizure

The arrests of Praise Nwogu, 19, and Ebong Emem Oghosa, 25, were carried out on 22 November after weeks of diligent surveillance and intelligence gathering focused on their online drug operation. The operation successfully led to the dismantling of the illicit network they ran.

Nwogu, a resident of Benin City originally from Imo State, was identified as the promoter of the illegal enterprise. NDLEA officials found her in possession of 12 plates and one cup of brownies that had been infused with cannabis indica. Edo State Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, described her as “the brain behind the online promotion with numerous videos on different channels.”

Her alleged partner, Ebong Oghosa from Akwa Ibom State but also residing in Benin City, is believed to have been the producer. A search led to the recovery of 76 grams of cannabis sativa, 1.5 grams of Colorado (a potent cannabis variant), a large pan, and a plate of the prepared cannabis brownies from his location.

Agency's Stance and Broader Crackdown

Commander Ofoyeju emphasized that the suspects were apprehended with various confectioneries that tested positive for cannabis. He stated that this operation highlights the NDLEA's unwavering commitment to fighting drug-related crimes and ensuring the law is firmly applied to those involved in the production and distribution of illegal substances.

He further noted that the arrests demonstrate the agency's capacity to adapt and respond to the evolving tactics employed by online drug traffickers. A strong warning was issued to others who might be attempting to operate under similar schemes.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and the suspects are expected to be charged in court. This case is part of a wider effort by the NDLEA in Edo State, which has recently seen the destruction of nine cannabis farms.

Collaboration and Public Appeal

Commander Ofoyeju revealed that the state government and the NDLEA are collaborating to implement strategies aimed at curbing illegal cannabis production. These strategies also include promoting sustainable agricultural practices as an alternative.

The Commander encouraged members of the public to play their part by reporting any suspicious drug-related activities to the agency. This collaboration is essential for ensuring a safer and healthier community for all residents.
