In a massive crackdown on smuggling networks, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Area Command at the Idiroko Border, has confiscated a staggering haul of narcotics and prohibited goods valued at over ₦2.6 billion.
Major Drug and Contraband Haul Uncovered
The Acting Controller of the Command, Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, revealed the seizures while briefing journalists on the command's activities within just 11 days of his assumption of office. The operations, which were intelligence-driven, took place between Thursday, 4 December, and Monday, 15 December 2025 across multiple locations in Ogun State.
The seized narcotics represent a significant threat to public health and security. The items include:
- 16 kilogrammes of heroin (16 pieces)
- 12 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine (ICE) (11 wraps)
- 1,502 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa (3,373 wraps in various sizes)
Deputy Comptroller Afeni expressed deep concern over the drug seizures, highlighting their devastating impact on youths and national security.
Details of the Seizures and Operations
The crackdown was not limited to narcotics. Officers also intercepted a wide array of illegally imported food items and other contraband. Key seizures from the operations include:
- 4,998 cartons of Doga brand spaghetti (10kg each) and 419 cartons of Oba brand spaghetti, illegally imported from Turkey.
- 2,200 kegs of vegetable oil (25 litres each) originating from Indonesia.
- 4,738 bags of foreign parboiled rice (50kg each).
- 6,750 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
- Two units of foreign-used vehicles and 309 bundles of used pneumatic tyres.
Afeni provided specific operational successes, noting that on 12 December 2025, an Iveco truck (RMY-354-XA) carrying the smuggled spaghetti was intercepted. The following day, 13 December 2025, a DAF truck (JHN-590-XA) conveying the vegetable oil was seized.
These operations were conducted along strategic axes including Lusada/Ado-Odo, Abule Kazeem/Igbo-Ora Road, Abeokuta, Imeko, Idiroko/Owode, and Ipokia.
Forfeiture, Revenue, and Continued Vigilance
The Comptroller stated that all intercepted trucks and their contents will be forfeited to the federal government in accordance with existing laws. Despite being primarily an enforcement command, Afeni reported that the unit has also generated ₦27,291,861.00 in revenue as of Tuesday, 16 December 2025, attributing this to diligent officers and compliant traders.
Afeni commended his officers for their relentless efforts and acknowledged the crucial support from sister agencies, traditional institutions, local informants, and community leaders. He issued a stern warning to smugglers, affirming the command's unwavering vigilance and readiness to protect the nation's economic and security interests.
In a concluding action, the seized narcotics were officially handed over to the Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Idiroko Special Command, Ekundayo William, for further investigation and prosecution.
