Bandits Issue Ransom Demands for Abducted Kaduna Churchgoers

In a disturbing development that has gripped Kaduna State, armed bandits who kidnapped approximately 177 worshippers from Kajuru Local Government Area have finally communicated their conditions for release. The attackers are demanding a staggering sum of ₦250 million along with 20 motorcycles as ransom for the safe return of the captives.

Details of the Mass Abduction and Ransom Demands

The mass kidnapping occurred on Sunday, January 17, 2026, during church services in the Iburu District of Kajuru LGA. The affected congregations included Cherubim and Seraphim Church branches 1 and 2, as well as the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) church. According to Ishaku Dan’azumi, the Village Head of Kurmin Wali, the bandits made their demands clear during a communication on Monday night.

"The bandits called and said Kurmin Wali community must pay ₦250 million and provide 20 motorcycles before they will release the kidnapped worshippers," Dan’azumi revealed to journalists. He further explained that the attackers have accused the community of stealing 17 motorcycles that were allegedly lost during recent military operations in the area.

Bandits Using Victims as Human Shields

Nine days after the traumatic incident, security sources indicate that more than 100 worshippers remain in captivity. A security operative speaking on condition of anonymity disclosed that the location of the abductees has been identified, but rescue operations face significant challenges.

"The bandits are allegedly using them as human shields to deter air strikes on their camp," the source confirmed. This tactic has complicated military efforts to target the bandit camps directly, as any offensive action could endanger the lives of the hostages.

Security Response and Government Intervention

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, has officially confirmed that the abduction took place while worshippers were attending church services. Security teams comprising operatives from multiple agencies are reportedly working around the clock to ensure the safe rescue of all victims.

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani visited the Kurmin Wali community on Wednesday to commiserate with residents over what he described as "an unfortunate and painful incident." During his visit, Governor Sani emphasized his administration's commitment to human life and the protection of citizens.

"The Kaduna state government places a premium on human life," Governor Sani stated. "The protection of lives and property remains a foremost responsibility of my administration." He assured community members that the state government is fully committed to ensuring the safe return of all abducted persons through intensified collaboration between state security agencies and the military.

Broader Context of Banditry in Northern Nigeria

This incident occurs against the backdrop of ongoing military offensives against bandit camps in parts of Kajuru Local Government Area. The village head indicated that the mass abduction appears directly linked to these security operations, with bandits seeking both financial gain and replacement of lost assets.

Attempts to reach the Kaduna State Police Command for additional comments were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. The situation continues to evolve as security forces balance the need for decisive action against the imperative of protecting innocent lives held captive by the armed groups.
