Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have apprehended a man suspected to be a major figure in kidnapping operations and seized a dangerous firearm in a significant breakthrough against violent crime.
Arrest Follows Credible Intelligence
According to the Command's spokesperson, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, the suspect, Mohammed Ibrahim, a 30-year-old from Numan Local Council in Adamawa State, was captured on January 10, 2026, at about 7:46 p.m. The arrest was executed by officers from the Anti-Cultism Unit, Emohua Annex, acting on what police termed credible intelligence and strategic directives from the Commissioner of Police to dismantle criminal networks.
Suspect Intercepted During Relocation Attempt
Ibrahim had allegedly been under surveillance for his role in multiple kidnapping-for-ransom activities, especially along the Port Harcourt International Airport Road in Omagwa. Police stated that he was intercepted while trying to move his operational base and weapons cache from Omagwa to the Agbonchia/Oyigbo Road in Eleme Local Council. This move was believed to be an attempt to avoid security forces and expand his criminal territory.
A search at the scene led to the recovery of critical evidence:
- One AK-47 rifle with breach number 2125.
- Two magazines loaded with 36 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm live ammunition.
Confession and Ongoing Investigation
During preliminary questioning, Ibrahim reportedly confessed to being the leader of a kidnapping syndicate and admitted involvement in several abductions across Rivers State. CSP Iringe-Koko confirmed that the suspect and the recovered exhibits are in custody while investigations continue to uncover the full extent of the gang's operations.
"Efforts have also been intensified to track down and apprehend other members of the gang and recover additional weapons believed to be in their possession," she added.
Police Chief Commends Officers, Issues Warning
The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, praised the Anti-Cultism Unit officers for their professionalism and swift action. He reassured residents of the Command's dedication to ensuring peace and security, urging the public to remain vigilant, cooperate with security agencies, and report any suspicious activities promptly.
CP Adepoju also sent a strong message to criminals, declaring that there would be no hiding place for them in the state.
