Plateau Governor Mutfwang Says Attackers' Identity Unknown After Deadly Assault
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has announced that the identity of the individuals responsible for a brutal attack in the Angwam community last Sunday, March 29, has not yet been determined. The governor made this disclosure while addressing journalists after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday, April 1.
Governor Briefs President on Security Measures
Governor Mutfwang explained that his visit to the Presidential Villa was to update President Tinubu on the recent developments and the steps taken by the state government in response to the incident. He emphasized that the situation, which he described as "quite unfortunate," is now under control, with authorities having evacuated corpses to mortuaries and some families already conducting burials for their deceased loved ones.
Curfew Imposed and Relaxed Amid Ongoing Tensions
In an effort to restore order, the state government imposed a curfew, which was relaxed on Wednesday morning from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. However, Governor Mutfwang noted that looters attempted to disrupt the peace again on Wednesday morning, but security forces successfully managed to calm the situation by noon, ensuring that it remains "well under control" at present.
Motives Behind the Attack Remain Unclear
When questioned about the reasons for the attack, Governor Mutfwang stated that such crises typically involve "a mixture of multiple reasons" and cannot be reduced to a single cause. He highlighted the challenge in ascertaining the actual motives without access to both the victims and the attackers. "Unfortunately, we’ve not been able to lay hands on the attackers yet to know their identities and their motive," he said, adding that while victims have shared their perspectives, the incident is being viewed as an act of criminality.
The governor strongly condemned the attack, labeling it "barbaric" and reiterating the state's commitment to maintaining security and peace in the region. Further investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violence.
