Plateau Killings: PSA-USA Demands Prosecution of Perpetrators and Urges Security Reforms
The Plateau State Association USA, Inc. (PSA-USA), a diaspora group representing Plateau indigenes in the United States, has issued a strong condemnation of the recent wave of killings in Plateau State. In a statement released on Friday, the association described the violence as "unacceptable" and called for immediate and decisive action by the Nigerian government to address the crisis.
Recurring Violence and Security Gaps Highlighted
Dr. Barth Shepkong, the National President of PSA-USA, emphasized the recurring nature of such attacks, pointing to serious deficiencies in security prevention, response, and coordination. "The continued loss of innocent lives under recurring circumstances underscores the urgent need for more proactive, coordinated, and effective security measures," Dr. Shepkong stated. He stressed that early warning signs must be met with early and effective intervention to prevent further tragedies.
Call for Government Action and Accountability
PSA-USA directly appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government, urging them to fulfill their primary responsibility of protecting lives and property. "We urge the President and the Federal Government to act with urgency and resolve to safeguard the lives of citizens in Plateau State," the statement read. The association demanded that perpetrators be identified, arrested, and prosecuted without delay, asserting that accountability is essential to breaking the cycle of violence.
Advocacy for Comprehensive Security Reforms
The group called for sweeping security reforms, including the establishment of state police to create a more responsive and localized security framework. Dr. Shepkong argued that the current national security structure is insufficient for addressing evolving threats. "Strengthening Nigeria's security architecture, including state policing, is essential," he said, warning that delayed or inadequate responses could erode public trust and further endanger communities.
Unity Among Stakeholders Emphasized
PSA-USA urged all critical stakeholders in Plateau State—such as religious leaders, traditional rulers, security agencies, and lawmakers—to collaborate in protecting lives and restoring public confidence. "This is a moment for leadership. All stakeholders must act decisively to protect lives and restore public confidence in the system," the statement emphasized. The association reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for sustainable security solutions and accountable governance, standing in solidarity with the Governor and peace-loving people of Plateau State.
Broader Mission and Community Support
As a non-profit organization, PSA-USA also focuses on supporting education, healthcare, and socio-economic development initiatives for underserved communities both in Plateau State and among Plateau indigenes in the United States. The group reiterated that the protection of human life is the foremost duty of government and must not be compromised.
