Troops Intercept Kidnapping Plot on Enugu-Otukpo Road, Save Three Civilians
In a decisive security operation, troops from Operation Whirl Stroke have thwarted a kidnapping attempt along the Enugu-Otukpo Road, successfully rescuing three victims without any casualties. The incident, which occurred on 25 February 2026, was confirmed by Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, the Acting Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation WHIRL STROKE, in a statement released on 26 February 2026.
Swift Response to Credible Intelligence
According to the official statement, troops deployed at the Forward Operation Base (FOB) Otukpo were conducting a routine night patrol when they received credible intelligence about a kidnapping in progress. The information indicated that an 18-seater Benue Links bus, with registration number TYK 221 YK, had been seized by suspected kidnappers. At the time of the attack, the vehicle was reportedly carrying four passengers and a minor.
Acting promptly on this tip-off, the troops mobilized to the scene and began trailing the kidnappers along their withdrawal route. Their rapid deployment and strategic pursuit forced the criminals to abandon three of the victims, allowing for a safe rescue operation. Notably, no direct contact or exchange of fire occurred during the pursuit, minimizing risks to both the troops and the civilians involved.
Evidence Recovered and Security Measures Emphasized
During the operation, one mobile phone, believed to belong to the kidnappers, was recovered at the scene. This evidence is expected to aid in further investigations and potentially lead to the identification and apprehension of the perpetrators. The Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke commended the troops for their resilience, vigilance, and operational efficiency, highlighting how their actions prevented what could have escalated into a major security breach.
In light of this incident, the Force Commander issued a stern advisory to road users, urging heightened vigilance. Key recommendations include:
- Motorists should be cautious and observe any unusual absence of vehicular movement within a two-kilometre stretch.
- Drivers are advised to pause and assess the situation where necessary to avoid potential dangers.
- Suspicious activities should be reported promptly to the nearest security outpost to enhance rapid response capabilities.
This operation underscores the ongoing efforts by Nigerian security forces to combat kidnapping and other criminal activities on major highways. It serves as a reminder of the importance of community cooperation and timely intelligence in maintaining public safety. The successful rescue of the victims without harm demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated military responses in crisis situations.
